Sarasota; Saturday March 25: another perfect day for baseball in Paradise. On Saturday, the Tampa Bay AA and A squads ventured to the Orioles’ Minor League Complex at Twin Lakes. On Sunday, a team listed as “Canada” is listed as coming, but I couldn’t find anyone who could tell me just what :Canada” team this is. Since the games starts at 11:00 AM, and many of the players will be given a “camp day” to rest or work on special skills, I will pass on Sunday’s game. Having 2 games at Twin Lakes in the afternoon and the Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium at 6:05 will be enough for me.

On Saturday, both starting pitchers were named “Cody”; Cody Sedlock for Frederick and Cody Dube for Delmarva.

Delmarva:

There will be some interesting players at Delmarva this year. I anticipate Matthias Dietz will be the ace of the staff. He can throw in the mid-90s and his control seems adequate to say that he will be able to “pitch” in the mid-to-upper 90s.

Another pitcher who may make the Delmarva team is Cody Dube.

Scouts are optimistic about 6’5″ Seamus Curran at 1B/DH. Preston Palmeiro still has nagging injuries, so I anticipate that he will start as DH/1B.

Seamus Curran’s 6’5″ size makes him a standout. Hopefully, his bat will make him a bigger standout.

Second baseman Chris Clare is recovering from previous year’s injuries and is making a nice impression.

The Delmarva lineup for Saturday’s game is shown below:

Frederick:

There’s a good chance that first round pick in in last year’s draft, Cody Sedlock, will jump over Delmarva to Frederick. Of course, as always, there are many factors that are yet to be determined for this spring that will affect this decision. Cody Sedlock started Saturday’s game for Frederick.

Where will pitcher Luis Gonzalez start this year? Frederick?

OF Randolph Gassaway may be a candidate for Frederick after his strong showing in the second half of 2016. He has been noticed by those who count.

Pitcher Hunter Harvey is still recovering from injury.
