Lester somehow beats O's again - 9/1/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles returned to earth with a painful loss to the Red Sox, 9-6. The O’s remained completely incapable of defeating Sox lefty Jon Lester, despite the fact that they torched him for five runs in the first two innings; Lester settled down while the Birds gave away their early lead, improving his career mark to 13-0 against the Orioles. Relievers Mark Hendrickson and Alfredo Simon (pic) imploded in the seventh, turning a two-run lead into a four-run deficit from which the O’s never recovered.

O's close hot August with another win - 8/31/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles finished a breakthrough month of August with a well-played win over the Boston Red Sox, 5-2. The Birds followed a familiar formula in the opener of the three-game set, enjoying a quality start (this one from Brian Matusz) and strong relief work to handcuff the Boston bats, while homeruns by Luke Scott (pic) and Felix Pie put the game away in the eighth. The O’s wrapped up August with an impressive 17-11 mark.

Guthrie, O's blank Angels again - 8/29/2010 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed a sensational series in Anaheim with their second straight shutout, squeaking out the narrowest of 1-0 victories. Jeremy Guthrie (pic) was the latest pitching star with 8 1/3 scoreless innings, getting a major assist at the end from relievers Michael Gonzalez and Koji Uehara, who kept the tying run stranded at third in the ninth. With the hard-fought win, the Birds completed a six-game season series sweep of the Angels.

Millwood leads O's to shutout win - 8/28/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued their mastery of the Angels, remaining unbeaten in five games against the club with a 5-0 victory. The much-maligned Kevin Millwood (pic) finally notched his first win since June-- and just his third of the year-- and he earned every bit of it, blanking the Angels over eight fantastic innings. Josh Bell broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a two-run homer, while Cesar Izturis contributed three hits in the Birds’ fourth shutout win. The O’s will attempt to sweep the season series on Sunday afternoon.

Pitching, defense lead O's to win - 8/27/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a three-game set in Anaheim with a well-played, old-school, pitching-and-defense-led 3-1 win over the Angels. Though the offense wasn’t much to write home about, the Birds more than made up the difference with near-flawless performances on the mound and in the field. Brad Bergesen (pic) delivered an outstanding eight-inning, four-hit outing, getting help from several sparkling defensive plays by his teammates, particularly shortstop Cesar Izturis.

Orioles blown out, shut out - 8/26/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their least competitive game under Buck Showalter, the Orioles absorbed an 8-0 pasting at the hands of the White Sox in the rubber game. Starter Jake Arrieta (pic) lasted just four innings and labored for 85 pitches while putting the Birds in a 4-0 hole, and the O’s offense was completely overpowered by Chicago starter Edwin Jackson, who struck out 10 in eight scoreless innings. Not much of anything went right tonight, folks.

Matusz rolls again, Orioles win - 8/25/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles enjoyed a bounceback game in Chicago, riding a tremendous Brian Matusz outing to a 4-2 win over the White Sox. The Birds’ rookie southpaw stymied the Sox bats over seven superb innings to continue his August hot streak, while the O’s offense made the most of their seven hits with four runs of support for their lefty starter.

O's clinch 13th straight losing year - 8/24/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles clinched their 13th straight losing season with defeat number 82, falling to the Chicago White Sox by a 7-5 score. Jeremy Guthrie’s post-All-Star groove hit a speed bump with a shaky six-run performance, as the O’s starter coughed up a tie-breaking three-run homer to Gordon Beckham in the seventh. Meanwhile, the Birds’ bats were stymied by Maryland native Gavin Floyd before a ninth-inning rally attempt fell short.

Homer-prone Millwood loses again - 8/22/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles settled for a series split with the Rangers, dropping a lackluster finale by a 6-4 score. Kevin Millwood’s nightmarish 2010 season continued with another ugly outing, as a pair of three-run homers by the Rangers doomed him to his league-leading 14th loss. The O’s weren’t able to battle back from their early deficit, managing just three runs against Texas starter Tommy Hunter as they concluded a 3-4 homestand.

Bell tolls twice, O's beat Lee again - 8/21/2010 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles bludgeoned Rangers ace Cliff Lee for the second time this year, powering four homeruns to outslug Texas, 8-6. The story of the day for the Birds was rookie third baseman Josh Bell (pic), who enjoyed a breakout performance with his first two big-league homers-- both off Lee-- and a five-RBI day. Back-to-back blasts by Ty Wigginton and Luke Scott also helped the O’s rough up Lee, while Koji Uehara-- in his first save opportunity in the majors-- closed the door with a scoreless ninth inning.

Orioles place Spoone on disabled list - 8/21/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller

Nick, Buck ejected in shutout loss - 8/20/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
On a night of frustrations at Camden Yards, the Orioles were blanked, 2-0, by the Rangers. Texas lefty C.J. Wilson absolutely buried the Birds’ lineup with 8 2/3 brilliant innings…though in the opinion of the O’s, he got some help from a man in blue. The Birds’ anger over home plate umpire Jeff Nelson and his ever-widening strike zone led to tirades and ejections for Nick Markakis (pic) and Buck Showalter, but the fireworks didn’t help the Orioles avoid their ninth shutout loss of the season.

Matusz masterful in shutout win - 8/19/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Behind a masterful Brian Matusz, the Orioles got back on the winning track with a 4-0 shutout of the Texas Rangers. The Birds’ rookie southpaw, in the midst of an up-and-down season, reached entirely new heights with his gem of a performance, hurling a career-best eight shutout innings against the powerful Texas offense. It took the O’s offense until the late innings to get him some run support, but a four-run outburst in the seventh provided all the cushion the brilliant Matusz would need.

Mariners one-up O's in rubber game - 8/18/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles took a frustrating series loss to the Mariners, dropping the rubber game by a 6-5 score. The Birds were perpetually playing from behind, thanks to a woeful offensive showing against ex-O's farmhand David Pauley (pic), and a few late runs weren't enough to overcome the deficit. Mariners left fielder Matt Tuiasosopo continued to destroy the Birds with a three-run homer and a game-saving catch in the eighth.

O's surrender to French in shutout loss - 8/17/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of the Mariners, putting up a pathetic offensive showing in a 4-0 defeat. The Orioles’ refusal to score runs for Kevin Millwood (pic) reached new levels of self-parody, as somebody named Luke French shut them out for 7 2/3 innings and carried a no-hitter into the sixth. The no-show with the bats wasted an excellent eight-inning outing by Millwood before the M’s poured it on late.

Orioles sign Machado - 8/17/2010 1:00:00 AM - Miller
The Orioles announced just after midnight Monday that they have signed third overall draft pick Manny Machado.

AJ's walkoff bunt leads O's again - 8/16/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles enjoyed their fourth walkoff win of the Buck Showalter era, outlasting the Seattle Mariners, 5-4, in the 11-inning series opener. Adam Jones’s (pic) surprising and perfectly executed bunt with two outs in the 11th plated the winning run from third base, capping a back-and-forth thriller that saw the O’s offense erase a 10th-inning deficit and the Birds’ bullpen pull off several fantastic escapes. The Orioles improved to an outstanding 11-3 in extra-inning games this season, and 10-4 under Showalter overall.

Orioles drop rubber game in TB - 8/15/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles reached a disappointing end to the road trip, taking a lackluster defeat to the Rays, 3-2, in the rubber game. Tampa Bay pitchers made mincemeat of O’s hitters for the second day in a row, led by the Rays’ latest prized pitching prospect, Jeremy Hellickson. While Jake Arrieta (pic) got the Birds back on the quality-start track, his three runs in six innings proved too much for the O’s offense to overcome. The Orioles suffered their first series loss under Buck Showalter, finishing with a 3-3 road trip overall.

Matusz mashed in 7-3 loss - 8/14/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles (temporarily, we hope) reverted to their frustrating, sloppy, pre-Buck Showalter form, turning a winnable game into a disappointing 7-3 loss to the Rays. The Birds’ stretch of quality starts hit a pothole when Brian Matusz (pic) was rocked for a five-run fourth inning that frittered away a 3-0 O’s lead. The offense wasn’t much better; aside from an Adam Jones three-run homer, the O’s wasted numerous chances to pile on the runs, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Okay, who let the old Orioles out?

Jim Johnson Rehabs in Frederick - 8/14/2010 1:00:00 PM - Vencill
Former Carolina League Pitcher of the Year and current Oriole reliever Jim Johnson made the first of a multi-game rehab stint in Frederick as Keys beat writer Adam Vencill caught up to him afterwards to discuss his schedule for return as well as how his stuff looked.

O's topple divisional foe in 5-0 win - 8/13/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their first matchup against an AL East opponent, Buck Showalter’s Orioles continued to pass every test, playing a great all-around game to beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-0. The Birds received their 10th quality start in 11 games, with Jeremy Guthrie (pic) blanking the Rays over six innings, and two relievers combined to finish just the Birds’ second shutout of the season. On the offensive end, 4-5-6 hitters Luke Scott, Adam Jones, and Felix Pie combined for eight hits-- five for extra bases-- and four RBIs. The defense did its part as well, with several Orioles making key plays to help an early lead stand up.

Bats go silent, O's fall, 4-1 - 8/12/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles dropped the finale of the three-game series in Cleveland, losing by a 4-1 score. Despite another strong outing by a starting pitcher-- a seven-inning, three-run effort from Kevin Millwood (pic)-- the Birds’ bats went silent against three Indians pitchers in a lackluster defeat. Buck Showalter was denied a chance to match the best 10-game start for an O’s manager in history, instead “settling” for an 8-2 mark.

Orioles extend PDC with Tides, Baysox and Keys - 8/12/2010 12:00:00 PM - Miller

Bergesen brilliant in 3-1 O's win - 8/11/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Birds racked up their eighth win in their last nine games, topping the Indians, 3-1, behind the finest outing of the year by a starting pitcher. Tonight the story was a brilliant Brad Bergesen, who held the Indians to just two hits and delivered the Orioles’ first nine-inning complete game of the season. Josh Bell pitched in with three hits and some fine defensive play, while Brian Roberts bashed a homer to back Brad’s masterpiece. Who are these guys, and what have they done with the Orioles?

Orioles outslug Indians, 14-8 - 8/10/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles took their winning roll on the road, crushing the Cleveland Indians, 14-8, to open a three-game series. For the first time in the Buck Showalter era, the O’s didn’t receive a quality start from their pitcher-- with Jake Arrieta getting tagged for five runs in the fourth-- but an explosive offense more than made up the difference. The Birds scored a season-high 14 runs and mashed four homers, as the tandem of Luke Scott (pic), Felix Pie, and Matt Wieters combined for six hits and three roundtrippers. Despite his struggles, Arrieta gutted out six innings to garner his fourth win.

B-Rob's walkoff caps 6-1 homestand - 8/9/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles finished an unbelievable opening homestand under Buck Showalter, pulling off another walkoff win in a 3-2, 10-inning victory. Brian Roberts’s (pic) leadoff homerun in the 10th rescued the Birds after a blown lead in the ninth and completed a 6-1 homestand, matching the best start ever for an Orioles manager. Brian Matusz delivered the Orioles’ seventh straight quality start to help lead the charge for the suddenly formidable Birds.

Guthrie's gem leads O's, 4-3 - 8/8/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued to cruise under Buck Showalter, winning for the fifth time in six games by edging the White Sox, 4-3. The Orioles turned in their sixth consecutive quality start, and this one was the best of the bunch: an eight-inning, one-run gem by Jeremy Guthrie. The Birds backed their starter with 11 hits and flawless defense, and closer Alfredo Simon held firm through a shaky ninth to seal the win.

Showalter's streak ends with 4-2 loss to White Sox - 8/7/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller

The unmistakable air of confidence that has permeated the Orioles clubhouse in the six days since manager Buck Showalter took the reigns brought a welcome change to the atmosphere inside Camden Yards. And while the Orioles’ recent four-game winning streak ushered in a sense of enthusiasm not felt in these parts in months - if not years - all good things must come to an end.

Baltimore benefited from a solid showing from starter Kevin Millwood, who held the Chicago White Sox to one run over six innings Saturday night. But reliever Jason Berken (pictured) allowed two crippling runs over the latter innings that doomed the Orioles to their first defeat under Showalter, 4-2 before an announced crowd of 24,929.

Jones swings O's past White Sox, 2-1 - 8/6/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller

Orioles center fielder Adam Jones was halfway down the dugout steps when he fired his helmet to the ground after wasting a bases loaded opportunity in the eighth inning of Friday’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Jones’ pop fly to third base off reliever Tony Pena stood as both the second out and the summation of a spirited, late-inning Orioles rally that went for naught.

Granted redemption against Pena two innings later, Jones lined a single to left field that scored Nick Markakis for the winning run in a 2-1 victory over the White Sox before an announced 19,687 at Camden Yards. The win was the Orioles’ second consecutive walk-off thriller and their fourth consecutive victory under manager Buck Showalter.

Izturis pushes O's past Angels, 5-4 - 8/5/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller

In the four months prior to manager Buck Showalter’s arrival in Baltimore, the Orioles routinely and inexplicably found ways to drop games like Thursday’s 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Afforded a banner performance from starting pitcher Jake Arrieta and a number of clutch hits, the Orioles appeared poised to waste it all when reliever Jason Berken served up a game-tying, three-run homer to Angels right fielder Torii Hunter in the top of the eighth inning. It was the type of situation that has become all-too familiar in this season of disappointment and frustration in Birdland. But with both a renewed sense of urgency and confidence under Showalter, the Orioles thrived under adversity and pulled out the win.

Shortstop Cesar Izturis’ (pictured) walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth scored pinch runner Julio Lugo to send the Orioles spilling from their first base dugout while the announced 17,362 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards went home happy in what seemed to be the only fitting end to Showalter’s exhilarating first series at the helm.

Matusz, O's manufacture 9-7 win over Angels - 8/4/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller

The Orioles’ second game under new manager Buck Showalter showcased a team with its sights set firmly on the future. Though they manufactured runs, enjoyed a strong outing from starting pitcher Brian Matusz (pictured) and received some much-needed pop from the heart of the order, Baltimore's 9-7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim didn’t come without the home team's traditional hiccups and question marks.

Matusz’s first win in exactly one month marked the club’s first winning streak since taking four consecutive contests heading into the All-Star break.

Orioles get angry, get beaten - 7/22/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ frustrations boiled over in a 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins, opening a four-game series. Though the game itself was nondescript-- with the Twins’ Carl Pavano pitching a shutout after the O’s fell behind early-- the Birds put on quite a show in the seventh inning. After a blown call at first base, Ty Wigginton (pic) and interim manager Juan Samuel both exploded into vein-popping, projectile-flinging, foot-stomping tirades that got them both ejected and elicited a standing ovation from the Camden Yards crowd.

Despite another comeback that saw the Birds erase an early 4-0 deficit, the Rays pushed ahead in the sixth against a shaky Brad Bergesen and the O’s bullpen. As usual, the O’s did some little things wrong-- including a key defensive mistake and a late-inning baserunning blunder-- which may have swayed the tide of this tight game.

The O’s bashed four homeruns-- including back-to-back-to-back shots, and two by Luke Scott (pic)-- and still were in line to lose the game before unveiling some late-inning magic. The Birds scored two runs to tie the game in the ninth, then knotted the score again in the 12th after the Rays had gone ahead, and finally won it nearly five hours after it began thanks to a Julio Lugo walkoff RBI single. It took until late July for win #30, but the O’s earned it in style.

O's do lots of things badly in loss - 7/17/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a recurring theme for this abysmal 2010 season, the Orioles again gave away a winnable game, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Blue Jays. In a game rife with lousy clutch hitting, shoddy defense, awful fundamentals, and questionable managing, even the normally reliable Jason Berken (pic) was dragged into the abyss, giving up a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth that sealed the Birds’ eighth loss to the Jays in as many games.

O's close 1st half with sweep in Texas - 7/11/2010 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In an otherwise brutal first half of the season, the Orioles finished on a fantastic note, completing a stunning four-game sweep of the Rangers in a 4-1 win. Jake Arrieta was the latest young O’s starter to shut down the Rangers’ bats, working 6 1/3 quality innings to make an early lead hold. Though the O’s still enter the All-Star break with the league’s worst record, this outstanding series may be a sign that things are starting to click. I never thought I’d say it, but I wish the Orioles could keep playing for the next few days.

Tillman outpitches Lee, O's win - 7/10/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued to steamroll through Texas, securing their first road series win of the year with a 6-1 victory. Despite the Rangers debut of much-ballyhooed Cliff Lee, it was his counterpart who stole the show-- the Birds’ Chris Tillman was absolutely masterful in his return from the minors, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowing just an unearned run in 7 1/3 outstanding frames. Meanwhile, the O’s roughed up Lee for three homeruns, cruising to their third straight win over the Rangers.

Orioles option Bell, recall Tillman - 7/10/2010 12:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles optioned third baseman Josh Bell to Triple-A Norfolk following Friday's 7-6 win over the Texas Rangers and recalled starting pitcher Chris Tillman in time to make Saturday's start.

Patterson's slam leads amazing win - 7/9/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their most incredible victory of the year, the Orioles pulled off a stunning comeback with a 7-6, 10-inning shocker of the Rangers. Trailing by four runs in the ninth and down to their final strike, Corey Patterson’s unbelievable game-tying grand slam with two outs resurrected the Birds from the grave. Jake Fox’s go-ahead homer in extras completed the amazing turn of events for the O’s, who finally recorded the final out at nearly 2:30 in the morning Eastern time. For the Orioles, this wild win was well worth the wait.

O's rally late, beat sloppy Texas - 7/8/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their final series of the first half with a surprising 6-4 comeback win over the Texas Rangers. Once down 4-0, the Birds came roaring back…or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that the Rangers gave the game away in a three-run O’s eighth that featured an error, two hit batsmen, and a go-ahead bases-loaded walk. Felix Pie (pic) and Scott Moore homered, and the Birds’ bullpen did stellar work with 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

Matt Hobgood: Mid-Term Report - 7/8/2010 9:00:00 AM - Shorebird
With all the discussion swirling around the status of 2009 1st round draft pick Matt Hobgood, Orioles Hangout writer Doc Shorebird took some time to sit down for a chat with Hobgood and his pitching coach, Troy Mattes. How's the 19 year old hurler feeling? Where is he with developing his changeup? And of course, how's his conditioning?

Birds swept out of Detroit, 4-2 - 7/7/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fizzled to the finish of a three-game sweep at the hands of the Tigers, losing the finale in a 4-2 yawner. While Tigers starter Max Scherzer made mincemeat of the O’s lineup, the Birds’ Brad Bergesen labored through a mediocre six-inning, 11-hit outing. Not much of interest occurred for this sleepwalking, zombie-like Orioles ballclub.

Keys Korner #7 - 7/7/2010 1:00:00 AM - Vencill
This edition of Keys Korner features an interview from several weeks ago with Frederick starting catcher Brian Ward (pictured) as he talks about growing up on baseball and life away from the diamond. Also, we'll check in with an old face, see just how red hot Ronnie Welty has been in his last 11 games and get a glimpse into who has the most multi-hit and multi-RBI performances this season.

O's blow late lead, lose on walkoff - 7/6/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles suffered another in a long line of gut-wrenching losses, blowing a winnable game with a 7-5, 11-inning defeat to the Tigers. The Birds led by three runs in the eighth inning, only to see the back end of their bullpen implode. Jason Berken allowed two runs in the eighth, Alfredo Simon coughed up a game-tying homer to Miguel Cabrera in the ninth, and David Hernandez (pic) served up the walkoff two-run blast to Johnny Damon in extras. Once again a horrific team finds a way to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.

O's outslugged by Tigers, 12-9 - 7/5/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a thoroughly ridiculous loss, the Orioles wound up on the wrong end of a 12-9 slugfest against the Detroit Tigers to open a three-game series. The Birds’ season-long struggles at the plate weren’t a problem today-- this time it was the pitching that spontaneously combusted, with Kevin Millwood coughing up five runs and three relievers allowing seven more. The interminable game featured 14 runs combined in the first two innings, but in the end the O’s found themselves in a familiar spot: the loss column.

Matusz snaps skid, O's beat Sox - 7/4/2010 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles reached the halfway point of their 2010 schedule, defeating the Red Sox, 6-1, in their 81st game. Brian Matusz shook off his two-and-a-half month winless drought with a tremendous outing in Boston, working seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits. The O’s offense got contributions from up and down the order as five different hitters tallied RBIs, and Nick Markakis and Cesar Izturis each collected three hits.

Lester dominance continues, O's lose - 7/3/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles sputtered through another forgettable game at Fenway, bleeding runs early and often in a 9-3 loss. Jeremy Guthrie was torched, Juan Samuel (pic) was tossed, Jon Lester was dominant against the O’s again, and that’s really all there is to it.

Brad Komminsk's Bowie Baysox mid-season report - 7/3/2010 10:00:00 AM - Miller
Baysox manager Brad Komminsk offers thoughts and analysis on his club through the halfway point of the 2010 season.

Bergesen shines, but O's fall late - 7/2/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a grueling 10-game road trip with a close-but-no-cigar loss to the Boston Red Sox, 3-2. Brad Bergesen took a major step forward with an efficient and impressive bounceback performance, dominating the Red Sox and pitching into the eighth inning, only for a fluke bloop hit to plate the go-ahead run for Boston. It was yet another case of the O’s not quite having enough juice to topple an AL East behemoth.

Birds do everything wrong in 8-1 loss - 7/1/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles brought an otherwise successful homestand to a dismal close, getting thumped by the Athletics in the rubber game, 8-1. The Birds pretty much did everything badly tonight, from a shaky Jake Arrieta outing to a no-show by the offense to a hideous effort by the defense, which committed two errors and countless other misplays. With the 5-4 homestand done, the O's now hit the road for nine games before the All-Star break.

O's Call Up 3B Josh Bell, Place Luke Scott on DL - 7/1/2010 3:00:00 PM - Hoffman
The Orioles today called up 3B Josh Bell from AAA Norfolk and placed Luke Scott on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

O's top A's in roller-coaster ride - 6/30/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles pulled off their fifth comeback win of the homestand, enjoying an eventful 9-6 victory over the Athletics. Despite an ugly six-run top of the fourth that may well have been the worst inning of the season for the Birds, the Orioles overcame their defensive mistakes with an impressive long-ball parade. The O’s jacked a season-high five homeruns-- including one by Adam Jones, who fell a triple shy of the cycle-- to erase a three-run deficit, and rode to victory on another stellar performance from the bullpen.

Orioles run on empty in 4-2 loss - 6/29/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fumbled away their winning streak with a frustrating 4-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics. A woefully un-clutch O’s offense, despite drawing seven walks and putting the leadoff man on base seven times, somehow generated only two runs and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The Birds’ defense didn’t help matters with some shoddy play, dooming a solid Brian Matusz to his ninth consecutive loss.

Orioles promote Britton to Norfolk - 6/28/2010 9:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles promoted Bowie Baysox starting pitcher Zach Britton to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday, ending weeks of speculation regarding a possible move.

O's rally back again, sweep Nats - 6/27/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles capped an impressive three-game sweep of the Nationals, once again rallying back from an early multi-run deficit for a 4-3 win. A three-run O’s fifth inning erased a 3-0 deficit, and Miguel Tejada delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the eighth to lead the Birds to another come-from-behind win. The bullpen continued its sensational work in the series, with four relievers combining on three scoreless frames. The Orioles’ fourth consecutive win marks a season high for the club.

Koji Activated, Atkins DFA'd - 6/27/2010 11:00:00 AM - Hoffman
The Orioles today announced that Koji Uehara has been activated from the disabled list and Garrett Atkins has been designated for assignment.

O's honor 1970 with comeback win - 6/26/2010 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles honored their 1970 World Series championship team with a hard-fought, well-played victory, 6-5, over the Nationals. For the second game in a row, the Birds overcame a huge deficit to stun the Nats, battling back from an early five-run hole. Eight of nine Orioles contributed a hit-- including three apiece from Matt Wieters (pic) and Miguel Tejada-- and the much-maligned bullpen did a tremendous job with five scoreless innings. The O’s clinched just their third series victory and will go for the sweep Sunday.

O's pull off big comeback win, 7-6 - 6/25/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their second regional rivalry interleague series with a shocking win over the Washington Nationals, 7-6. After so many ugly losses for the O’s in which they gave away potential victories, tonight’s game was exactly the opposite: the Birds pulled off their biggest comeback of the year in a game they had no business winning. Four Nationals errors helped the O’s rally back from a 6-0 deficit, including a game-ending throwing miscue that gave the Birds a walkoff win. Scott Moore (pic) was a late-inning hero with a pinch-hit homer, and Nick Markakis and Corey Patterson each had three hits.

O's crack 20-win mark in blowout - 6/24/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles finally notched their 20th win of the year, riding an offensive explosion to an 11-5 victory over the Marlins. The Birds tied a season high with a 17-hit attack, led by Miguel Tejada’s (pic) 4-for-5 night with a homerun. Adam Jones also went yard as part of a 3-for-5 game, and even Craig Tatum got into the mix with a career-best three hits. The ample run support backed Kevin Millwood, who labored through 116 pitches in five innings but hung in long enough to earn his second straight win.

Pie to rehab in Frederick - 6/24/2010 12:00:00 PM - Miller
Orioles outfielder Felix Pie will begin the second leg of his Major League rehabilitation assignment on Thursday with the Frederick Keys.

O's squander early lead, lose again - 6/23/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles suffered another embarrassing defeat to the Marlins, 7-5. Tonight, the O’s jumped out to a four-run lead for Brian Matusz, only to watch it crumble through a combination of shaky pitching, inconsistent offense, and managerial malfeasance. The torture never ends, folks. It just never ends.

Marlins sink the Orioles, 10-4 - 6/22/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their final homestand of the first half with a typically dismal loss, 10-4, to the Florida Marlins. A four-run second against Jeremy Guthrie gave the Fish an early lead that they never relinquished, as they piled on against the O's bullpen to turn the game into a laugher. Through 70 games, the Birds have won 19 of them. Nineteen.

Britton named Orioles' Futures Game representative - 6/22/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
Bowie Baysox left-handed pitcher Zach Britton will represent the Orioles in the 2010 Futures Game on July 11 in Anaheim.

The Delmarva Shorebirds announced Monday that right-handed starter Kenny Moreland was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 14 through June 20.

Orioles lose #50 with 9-4 defeat - 6/20/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles once again failed to secure a series win, dropping the rubber game to the Padres, 9-4. Despite a hot start-- as the O’s handed a 4-0 first-inning lead to Jake Arrieta-- the game quickly took a turn for the worst. Arrieta suffered his worst outing as a big-leaguer, getting chased after three innings with six runs of damage, as the Padres scored nine unanswered to turn the game into a laugher. The Orioles have won just two of 23 series, none on the road, as they became the first team to lose 50 games this year.

Millwood finally wins, O's hold on - 6/19/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles finally delivered Kevin Millwood (pic) his first win of the year in a somewhat miraculous 5-4 win over the Padres. A clean, well-played victory this wasn’t-- the O’s continued to make ugly mistakes on all sides of the ball, including a baserunning blunder and an embarrassing botched rundown. Yet the offense showed surprising life, rallying back from an early deficit and jumping ahead on an Adam Jones homerun, while newly restored closer Alfredo Simon hung on through a nail-biting ninth to lock down the win.

O's blow it in 9th, lose to Padres - 6/18/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued to crash and burn, letting a ninth-inning lead slip away in another painful loss, 3-2, to the San Diego Padres. The Birds’ motto seems to be “Every day, a new goat,” and that dubious title fell today to closer David Hernandez, who imploded in the ninth for his first blown save. The Padres rallied with a walk and four hits for the instant win, while the O’s were left licking their wounds for the umpteenth time this year.

Orioles trade Ouellette to White Sox - 6/17/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles traded Bowie Baysox right-handed reliever Ryan Ouellette to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Details of the deal have not been announced.

Wasted opportunities cost Orioles - 6/16/2010 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles all-too-predictably failed to record a rare series win, dropping the rubber game to the Giants, 6-3. The story yet again for the Birds was their embarrassing and inexplicable lack of clutch hitting, as the O’s put 17 runners on base and plated just three of them, going 3-for-14 with men in scoring position. Meanwhile, ex-Oriole Aubrey Huff (pic) burned his former club with a 3-for-4 night, including a homerun. With their latest miserable failure, the Orioles have won just two of their 22 series this year.

Joseph makes second start at first base - 6/16/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
Baysox catcher Caleb Joseph received his second start of the season at first base in Wednesday’s game against the Reading Phillies, but said there are no plans for him to move to the position permanently.

Arrieta is O's lucky charm again - 6/15/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles snapped their four-game losing streak with a well-pitched win over the Giants, 4-1. The Birds followed exactly the same formula that got them their previous victory last week: a dazzling start by Jake Arrieta, a four-run offensive “explosion,” and quality bullpen work capped by a David Hernandez save. The rare victory sets up a rubber game on Wednesday afternoon, when the O’s will go for the even rarer series win.

Orioles a Giant dud in blowout loss - 6/14/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles gamely showcased their losing skills to a whole new audience, getting trounced by the San Francisco Giants, 10-2, to open a three-game series. Making their first visit in eight years to the City by the Bay, the O’s demonstrated to West Coast NL fans exactly why they are the laughingstock of baseball. Starter Chris Tillman was bludgeoned for six runs in two innings, the Birds’ bats put up their usual pathetic performance, and the Orioles kept apace with the ’62 Mets by dropping to 17-47.

Mets complete sweep of sorry O's - 6/13/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed a humiliating sweep at the hands of the Mets, getting thumped in the finale by an 11-4 score. Kevin Millwood, still looking for his first Orioles victory, put his team in a huge early hole by coughing up five runs in the first inning, and the news got no better from there as the O’s stumbled to yet another lackluster loss. The debacle completed a 2-7 homestand for the pathetic, painful, and unsightly Birds.

O's Option Bergesen to AAA Norfolk - 6/13/2010 4:00:00 PM - Hoffman
The Orioles today announced they've optioned Brad Bergesen to AAA Norfolk.

Offense takes the night off again - 6/12/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles dropped their second straight to the Mets, 3-1. In a familiar refrain, a quality performance by a starting pitcher (Brian Matusz) was negated by a putrid offensive effort against a no-name junkballer, with the O’s packing in the bats after a lone first-inning run. The Mets-- who hadn’t won a road series all season-- have gotten healthy against the woeful Birds and will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon.

O's knuckled to death in loss - 6/11/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles, as usual, sputtered back to square one, losing the opener of a three-game series to the New York Mets, 5-1. Yet again the O’s failed to build any momentum after an exciting win on Thursday, instead putting up another woeful offensive performance against Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Birds starter Jeremy Guthrie was victimized by one bad pitch, a three-run homer that allowed the Mets to cruise to victory.

Arrieta debuts, Orioles win, 4-3 - 6/10/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles averted a sweep with arguably their most exciting victory of the year, beating the Yankees by a 4-3 score. The win was notable not for how they did it, but for who was involved. Jake Arrieta (pic) burst onto the scene with an impressive major-league debut, working six strong innings and racking up six strikeouts against a tough Yankee offense, and David Hernandez got the call to close the game, preserving a one-run lead in the ninth for his first big-league save. I wish the O’s played games like this more often.

Yanks win 10th straight over O's - 6/9/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles lost to the Yankees for the 10th straight game, taking the wrong end of a 4-2 final. Oriole-killer CC Sabathia picked up his fourth win against the Birds this year, as the O’s wasted an early lead and a quality Chris Tillman start with a defensive meltdown in the sixth inning. Just 103 games remaining, folks!

Millwood, Orioles thumped by Yanks - 6/8/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles kicked off a new losing streak, getting trounced by the New York Yankees, 12-7, to open a three-game series. Instead of building off of Sunday’s hard-fought win, the O’s resumed the embarrassing play that has destroyed their 2010 season, getting horrid outings from starter Kevin Millwood and the bullpen in an unsightly loss. A late-inning rally attempt by the Orioles’ offense proved too little, too late. Seriously, would it kill this team to have two competent games in a row?

O's, Markakis Stop Skid, Drop Boston 4-3 - 6/6/2010 11:00:00 PM - Hoffman
The Orioles this afternoon ended their 10 game losing straight thanks to a solid performance by starter Brian Matusz and a walk-off RBI single by Nick Markakis to give Baltimore the 4-3 win over the Red Sox on Sunday.

Lester beats Birds again, 8-2 - 6/5/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles extended their losing streak to double digits, getting blown out yet again by the Red Sox, 8-2. An excellent Jeremy Guthrie outing was negated by a beyond-putrid O’s offense that was stymied by Jon Lester, who ran his record to 11-0 all-time against the Birds. The bullpen collapsed in a six-run ninth to eliminate any doubt from the outcome, as the Orioles fell to 15-41 on the season. Only 106 games left!

New manager, same sorry result - 6/4/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Despite a day of tumultuous turnover, the Orioles continued to lose with an 11-0 debacle against the Boston Red Sox. The Birds made Juan Samuel’s (pic) managerial debut an affair to forget by doing practically everything wrong, from Chris Tillman’s horrible 1 1/3 inning start to yet another no-show from an inept offense. The O’s lost their ninth game in a row and dropped to 15-40 on the season. Somewhere, deposed skipper Dave Trembley is breathing a sigh of relief that he’s no longer associated with this nonsense.

It's a Giant Step Backwards - 6/4/2010 10:00:00 PM - Hoffman
Orioles Hangout Managing Editor Scott Hoffman was on the scene at Oriole Park when the O's introduced interim manager Juan Samuel to the media.

Allenson named O's third base coach - 6/4/2010 12:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles announced Friday that Norfolk Tides manager Gary Allenson will serve as the club's interim third base coach, replacing Juan Samuel. Minor League Infield Coordinator/Latin America Field Coordinator Bobby Dickerson has been named Norfolk's interim manager.

Find out just how you can do inside!

O's swept out of Bronx; what next? - 6/3/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles were swept out of Yankee Stadium for the second time this year, losing their eighth straight game, 6-3. Kevin Millwood continued his winless season with a laborious, shaky outing, while the Orioles’ putrid offense managed only three hits. If this was the swan song for manager Dave Trembley (pic), as has been speculated, then the O’s certainly made his final game just as forgettable as the rest of this pathetic 2010 season.

Bergesen blasted, Birds beaten - 6/2/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ losing skid grew to seven games in an all-around pathetic effort against the Yankees, 9-1. Starter Brad Bergesen suffered the shortest outing of his career, going just 2 1/3 innings and getting rocked for six runs. Meanwhile, the O’s offense posted only one run for the third straight game, looking like a team that has already checked out on the season-- with four months still to go. Isn’t this fun?

Critical error dooms O's in the Bronx - 6/1/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a three-game series in the Bronx exactly as you’d expect they would, losing their sixth in a row, 3-1, to the New York Yankees. Miguel Tejada’s (pic) unsightly, untimely throwing error with two on and two out in the seventh broke a one-all tie as the O’s continued to find ways to beat themselves, and another putrid offensive performance didn’t help matters. On the plus side, starter Brian Matusz returned to form with 6 2/3 strong innings, only to be saddled with the undeserved loss.

Keys Korner #5 - 6/1/2010 - Vencill
This edition of Keys Korner takes a look inside one of the largest, yet down to earth relievers in Jose Diaz, examines the hustle by outfielder Kyle Hudson (pictured) and find out who Frederick starting pitcher Nate Nery attributes most of his success to. Also check out the league leaders and see where some of the former Keys are at in 2010, all this and more!

Shockingly, Orioles lose again - 5/30/2010 4:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles dropped their fifth straight game, getting swept out of Toronto in a 6-1 loss. The O’s didn’t hit well, didn’t pitch well, played with no discernible energy or skill, and fell to 15-36 on the season. Even the most pessimistic O’s fans could never have imagined the season would turn into such a horrible debacle only two months in. It seems to be only a matter of time before the ax falls on manager Dave Trembley.

Tillman solid, Orioles not - 5/29/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles lost again-- surprise, surprise!-- with a late-inning 5-2 defeat in Toronto. A solid season debut by Chris Tillman (pic) couldn’t snap the O’s out of their doldrums, as an eighth-inning bullpen failure by Jason Berken and Alberto Castillo doomed the Birds to their 35th loss in 50 games this season. Somebody make it stop. Please.

O's Recall Tillman, Option Meredith to AAA Norfolk - 5/29/2010 10:00:00 AM - Hoffman
The Orioles optioned RHP Cla Meredith to AAA Norfolk after last night's 5-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Speculation swirled all week, but this morning the club made it official: RHP Chris Tillman has been recalled and will start this afternoon's contest against Toronto.

O's mail it in, fall to Blue Jays, 5-0 - 5/28/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued their losing ways with one of their most laughably inept performances in a season full of them, falling to the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-0. The tone was set immediately when the O’s clownishly blundered their way through a first inning that featured no less than four defensive mistakes, several by miscast second baseman Scott Moore. The Birds’ defensive incompetence staked the Jays to a multi-run lead they would never relinquish, as the O’s offense was blanked for the fourth time this year.

O's lose again with 8th-inning collapse - 5/27/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles yet again grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory, suffering a painful 7-5 loss to the Athletics in the rubber game. Despite a depleted lineup, the O’s amassed a three-run lead and carried it to the eighth behind a superb Brad Bergesen, only for everything to go pear-shaped in a five-run A’s eighth. A few bad breaks and inexplicable bullpen management by Dave Trembley (pic) were the key ingredients in the horrid meltdown, dooming the hapless O’s to yet another heart-wrenching defeat.

Matusz mashed, offense AWOL in loss - 5/26/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles sputtered to another dreary loss, falling to the Athletics by a 6-1 final. True to form, the O’s followed up a well-played victory on Tuesday with a hapless non-starter tonight, falling back to 17 games below .500. The tone was set immediately when the A’s bashed struggling starter Brian Matusz for four runs in the first inning, while the pitiful Birds’ bats managed only three hits, two of which didn’t make it past the infield grass.

Birds peck away at A's in 5-1 win - 5/25/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a brief three-game homestand with an all-around well-played win over the Oakland Athletics, 5-1. Jeremy Guthrie, despite lacking his best stuff, got key outs in critical situations to earn the victory, while the O’s offense-- despite going hitless with runners in scoring position-- scraped together runs with productive outs and patient at-bats. Nick Markakis (pic) swatted his third homerun and reached base four times.

Reimold placed on temporary inactive list - 5/25/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles placed Norfolk outfielder Nolan Reimold on the temporary inactive list Tuesday due to a family matter. Bowie outfielder Danny Figueroa has been transferred to Norfolk to take his place.

Baysox Notebook - 5/25/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
In this edition of the Baysox Notebook, beat writer Mike Miller catches up with former Orioles pitcher Adam Loewen (pic) in his first trip back to Prince George's Stadium. Also included are notes on Brandon Waring's current slump, an introduction to reliever Mike Hinckley and much more.

Hernandez to 'pen? - 5/25/2010 12:00:00 PM - Hoffman
MASNSports.com blogger Roch Kubatko is reporting that O's hurler David Hernandez (pictured) is headed to the bullpen. Could Chris Tillman be on his way to Baltimore?

O's come back in 9th, but lose anyway - 5/23/2010 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued their death spiral into irrelevance with yet another defeat, dropping the rubber game to the Nationals, 4-3, in 10 innings. Josh Willingham’s walkoff homer against Cla Meredith (pic) clinched the rubber game for the Nats, dropping the Orioles to an unsightly 14-31 record. Besides an impressive two-run comeback in the ninth, the O’s put up another paltry offensive effort, amassing just six hits in 10 innings while finishing a 1-4 road trip and taking their 11th series loss in 15 series this year.

O's blow it in 6th, lose #30 - 5/22/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles reached a dubious major-league milestone for 2010, becoming the first team in baseball with 30 losses after a 7-6 defeat to the Nationals. For once, the offense wasn’t the primary source of blame; instead, the Birds’ pitching staff and defense let them down in a brutal sixth inning that saw them blow a 6-3 lead. Starter Brad Bergesen (pic) struggled through a laborious outing that nullified a few nice performances by O’s hitters, including Ty Wigginton’s four-RBI game and Adam Jones’s bizarre inside-the-park-homer.

O's open Beltway Series with 5-3 win - 5/21/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their “interleague rivalry” series with a hard-fought win, beating the Washington Nationals by a 5-3 score. In a game that saw the Birds use 16 players on their 25-man roster, the O’s got contributions from some unexpected sources, from backup catcher Craig Tatum (who had two hits and two RBIs) to starter David Hernandez, who snapped a personal 11-game losing streak with a solid but laborious outing. An Adam Jones (pic) homerun gave the Orioles an early lead that they never surrendered.

Hopeless Orioles swept again - 5/20/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles got swept out of Texas, losing the finale of the two-game set, 13-7, to the Rangers. Brian Matusz’s horrendous start set an inauspicious tone for the Birds tonight, as the young southpaw was tattooed for seven runs without getting out of the third inning. Matusz wasn’t the only one to blame-- the Birds also looked lackluster in the field and squandered several early scoring opportunities before rallying when it was too late to matter. The 13-29 O’s were swept for the fifth time this year. Are we having fun yet?

Orioles option Castillo to Norfolk - 5/20/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles announced after Thursday's game that they have optioned left-handed reliever Alberto Castillo to Triple-A Norfolk.

Worn-out bullpen loses late, 4-3 - 5/19/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles followed their walkoff win with a walkoff loss, falling to the Texas Rangers by a 4-3 score. For six innings, this was a pretty good game-- as Jeremy Guthrie’s strong outing helped the O’s to a one-run lead-- until it took a bewildering turn in the seventh. Manager Dave Trembley perplexingly used six relievers in a span of 2 2/3 innings, most of whom were unimpressive, as Matt Albers (pic) blew the lead in the seventh and three hurlers gave up the game-winning Rangers rally in the ninth. What just happened?

O's walk off with 4-3 win in extras - 5/18/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles salvaged the final game of their homestand with a walkoff, 10-inning win, beating the Royals by a 4-3 score. Despite falling behind 3-0 to Cy Young winner Zack Greinke, the Birds held tough, tying the game with three solo homers-- two by Luke Scott (pic) and one by Corey Patterson-- and ultimately winning in extras on Nick Markakis’s bases-loaded hit. Kevin Millwood turned in another quality outing with eight strong innings, keeping the game close and setting the stage for the late O’s heroics.

Un-clutch O's give one away to Royals - 5/17/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles gave away another winnable game to a lousy team, losing to the Kansas City Royals by a 4-3 score. Shaky defense, a critical balk, and a couple of bad pitches doomed starter Brad Bergesen, while the Birds' bats proved inept again by going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, stranding the bases loaded in the ninth. In a homestand full of games against terrible teams, the O's continue to prove themselves the worst of the worst.

O's can't solve Westbrook in 5-1 loss - 5/16/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
Upon receiving word that he would be making a spot start in Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Indians, Mark Hendrickson told Orioles manager Dave Trembley that he would go as far as he could, as long as he could and as hard as he could. Despite working on only two days rest, Hendrickson did precisely that, allowing three runs in a spirited, five-inning effort.

But Indians starter Jake Westbrook, who handcuffed the home team at all the right moments, proved too sharp for another paltry Orioles offensive showing. Westbrook threw a complete game gem to lead Cleveland to the series win in a 5-1 victory before an announced 29,323 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Zach Britton -The Brave Work in Progress - 5/16/2010 12:00:00 PM - Pente
5/11 - Not all minor league players are willing to work on things that might lead to less success in the near-term, but Bowie left-hander Zach Birtton bucks that trend.

Hernandez scratched due to shoulder soreness - 5/16/2010 1:00:00 AM - Miller
The Orioles scratched right-hander David Hernandez from his scheduled start on Sunday due to soreness in his right shoulder. Also, manager Dave Trembley updated the status of Mike Gonzalez and Brian Roberts.

Hughes optioned to Norfolk - 5/15/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles announced after Saturday's game that they have optioned first baseman Rhyne Hughes to Triple-A Norfolk.

Simon's meltdown costs O's in 8-2 loss to Indians - 5/15/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller

Sooner or later it was bound to happen. Given Alfredo Simon’s penchant for an edge-of-your seat ninth inning, then perhaps it’s not surprising that the Orioles’ closer-by-default finally gave up the big one. And after reeling off three consecutive victories entering Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Indians, questions about the back-end of the bullpen have again resurfaced.

Simon allowed four runs in the top of the ninth, including a three-run home run by Austin Kearns while Cla Meredith gave up four of his own during an eight-run Cleveland rally as the Orioles fell to the Indians, 8-2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Guthrie dominates, Patterson shines in 8-1 O's win - 5/14/2010 12:00:00 PM - Miller
Orioles starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie dominated over eight innings of one-run ball, while Corey Patterson (pic) contributed with his glove and his bat in an 8-1 win over the Cleveland Indians at Camden Yards.

Scott's slam leads big O's comeback - 5/13/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles pulled off their most incredible comeback of the year, shocking the Mariners with an exhilarating 6-5 win in the rubber game. Down four runs in the eighth and seemingly destined for another dreary loss, the O’s came back from the dead and rallied for five runs, capped by Luke Scott’s (pic) dramatic go-ahead grand slam. The heroics continued in the ninth when Corey Patterson threw out the potential tying run at the plate for the final out of the game, capping the Birds’ most exciting win of the season.

Bergesen leads O's to win #10 - 5/12/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
It took until mid-May, but the Orioles finally cracked double digits in the win column, riding a stellar start by Brad Bergesen to a 5-2 victory over the Mariners. The young right-hander was in vintage 2009 form, delivering 7 2/3 sensational innings and getting 13 ground-ball outs. Meanwhile, several slumping hitters showed signs of life, with Adam Jones collecting three hits and Luke Scott bashing a homer and a double. With their 10th victory in the books, the O’s will go for a series win on Thursday afternoon.

Patterson, Reimold, and Roberts all Moved Around - 5/12/2010 7:00:00 PM - Hoffman
The Orioles today selected the contract of OF Corey Patterson, sent OF Nolan Reimold down to AAA Norfolk, and shifted 2B Brian Roberts to the 60-day disabled list.

O's return home with awful game - 5/11/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened an eight-game homestand with an absolutely pathetic performance, losing to the Seattle Mariners by a 5-1 score. In what was supposed to kick off their “easy” part of the schedule, the O’s instead played one of their worst games of the year, from several defensive misplays to a rough David Hernandez outing to another woeful performance by the hapless offense. At what point do things start to get better?

O's sleepwalk through 6-0 loss - 5/9/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles had to settle for a series split in Minnesota, getting blown out in the finale of a four-game set, 6-0. The tone was set early when starter Brian Matusz suffered a rare stink bomb of a performance, getting ripped for six runs in 3 2/3 innings, while the O’s offense continued its frustrating futility with its third shutout loss of the season. With a 2-5 road trip and the toughest part of the schedule behind them, the Orioles will hope to regain some momentum as they start an eight-game homestand against lesser opponents.

Orioles split twin bill with Twins - 5/8/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles split a day-night doubleheader with the Twins, winning the opener, 7-3, before falling in the nightcap by a 6-1 score. In game one, the O’s again received a quality outing from a starter-- this time Jeremy Guthrie (pic), who earned his first win of 2010-- and a stellar performance from the revitalized bullpen. This time, the offense joined the party, going an impressive 8-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Game two was a different story-- despite another strong outing from Kevin Millwood, the O’s offense went completely silent and a leaky bullpen put the game out of reach in the late innings.

O's right on Target with shutout win - 5/6/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their first-ever series at new Target Field with an impressive 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins. While the offense was nothing to write home about-- with Ty Wigginton’s homer providing the game’s only runs-- the O’s played near-flawless ball in all other aspects of the game. Brad Bergesen (pic) enjoyed by far his finest start of the year with 6 2/3 shutout innings, and three relievers (including Koji Uehara in his first appearance of 2010) combined to complete the Birds’ first shutout win.

Lifeless Orioles swept again - 5/5/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles rolled over to an ugly three-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees, dropping the afternoon finale by a 7-5 score. The first seven innings were arguably the most pathetic baseball the O’s have played in this pathetic season, rife with defensive blunders, atrocious pitching, and the ever-present punchless offense. By the time the Birds finally made some noise with rallies in the eighth and ninth, they’d already dug themselves too big a hole to climb out of. Dave Trembley’s team was swept for the fourth time in nine series this season, dropping to a league-worst 7-21.

Orioles option Castillo to Norfolk - 5/5/2010 12:00:00 PM - Vencill
Following Wednesday's game the Orioles announced that Alberto Castillo has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.

O's waste rallies, lose to Yanks again - 5/4/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles added to their season-long slate of frustrating losses, giving away a winnable game in a 4-1 defeat to the Yankees. The Birds’ clutch-hitting failures returned with a vengeance in an embarrassing offensive effort that saw them go 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, including a momentum-shifting, rally-killing debacle in the third inning. Meanwhile, Brian Matusz’s quality start was sabotaged somewhat by his own costly error, leaving the O’s on the brink of a three-game sweep on Wednesday afternoon.

One bad inning burns Birds in loss - 5/3/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles had their wings clipped in the opener of a three-game series in New York, falling to the Yankees by a 4-1 score. A fourth-inning defensive misplay proved extremely costly for the Birds, as a failure to turn a double play opened up a four-run Yankee rally against Jeremy Guthrie. Meanwhile, CC Sabathia stymied the O’s for the second time in a week, snapping the Birds’ three-game winning streak.

Chris Tillman Named IL Pitcher of the Week - 5/3/2010 1:00:00 PM - Vencill
The International League announced today that Norfolk pitcher Chris Tillman has been named the League’s Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 26-May 2.

O's win another walkoff; sweep Sox - 5/2/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed an incredible weekend series, sweeping the Red Sox with a 3-2, 10-inning win in the finale. Ty Wigginton’s (pic) walkoff RBI double capped a game that was mostly notable for its pitching, with Kevin Millwood delivering a strong eight-inning performance and the bullpen adding two scoreless innings. The Birds’ first three-game winning streak finished an impressive 4-2 homestand against the Yankees and Red Sox. Wow. Maybe this season isn’t such a lost cause after all.

O's top Red Sox in homerun derby - 5/1/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
On a homer-happy night at Camden Yards, the Orioles outslugged the Red Sox in a 12-9 win. The two teams combined on nine roundtrippers, including five by the Birds. Team homerun leader Ty Wigginton (pic) led the way with two jacks, and was joined by Matt Wieters, Nick Markakis, and Luke Scott. The O’s overcame a three-run deficit with an incredible 10-run explosion in the fifth and sixth innings, then survived a late-inning Sox rally to clinch their first series win of the year.

O's Recall Bergesen, Demote Johnson - 5/1/2010 4:00:00 PM - Hoffman
Brad Bergesen (pictured) was recalled from AAA Norfolk today. Struggling reliever Jim Johnson was demoted from the big league club to Norfolk as the corresponding roster move.

Tejada leads Orioles to walkoff win - 4/30/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles enjoyed their first walkoff win of the season, beating the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings, 5-4. In the midst of a game that was shaping up to be another dreary loss-- complete with a blown lead by the bullpen-- Miguel Tejada took the team on his shoulders. First he swatted a game-tying homerun in the eighth, and then delivered the game-winning hit with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. For one night, at least, things finally went right for the beleaguered O’s on a joyful night in Birdland.

O's blanked by Yanks, lose 18th - 4/29/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles ended their three-game set with the Yankees in a lackluster yet predictable fashion, losing by a 4-0 score. The Birds’ bats returned to their slumbering ways as they managed just three singles against A.J. Burnett (pic), ruining a quality start by Brian Matusz. Instead of securing their first series win of the year, the O’s rolled over to a 4-18 record.

Uehara completes rehab stint in Bowie - 4/29/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
Koji Uehara threw two scoreless innings on a rehabilitation assignment in Bowie this week and says he's ready to rejoin the Orioles.

O's stumble early, stagger to loss - 4/28/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fell back to their familiar losing ways, suffering a lackluster 8-3 defeat to the Yankees. The O’s were out of this game almost immediately after it began, thanks to an ineffective outing by Jeremy Guthrie and a series of defensive miscues. Down 5-0 to CC Sabathia in the second inning, the Birds could do little more than limp to the finish.

Simon says: O's survive 9th for win - 4/27/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Could it be…an actual winning streak? It’s true! The Orioles won their second straight game with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the New York Yankees. The Birds got big contributions from three guys who were in Triple-A a week ago: Rhyne Hughes delivered a game-tying hit, Alberto Castillo worked 1 2/3 innings of flawless relief, and surprise closer Alfredo Simon (pic)-- making his first big-league appearance in more than a year-- pitched the ninth for the save, helping the O’s survive a near-meltdown in the final inning. As usual, the Orioles didn’t make it easy, but this time they pulled it out.

Orioles Recall Simon, option Mickolio - 4/27/2010 1:00:00 PM - Vencill

O's battle back, outlast Sox in extras - 4/25/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles salvaged the final game of the road trip, edging out the Red Sox in a nail-biting, back-and-forth, 7-6 win in 10 innings. What at first seemed destined for another lackluster loss transformed into quite a game, with the O’s rallying back from a three-run deficit in the seventh, then taking the lead on rookie Rhyne Hughes’s (pic) bases-loaded single in the 10th. The Birds’ bullpen amazingly averted a near-meltdown in the bottom half, as Cla Meredith got the last two outs with the tying and winning runs aboard. It wasn’t a pretty win by any means, but at this point, the O’s will gladly take whatever they can get.

Bullpen blows it again, O's lose, 7-6 - 4/24/2010 11:00:00 PM -
The Orioles found yet another way to lose a winnable ballgame, choking away a seventh-inning lead in a 7-6 loss to the Red Sox. Despite the best efforts of starter Brian Matusz and a surprisingly potent O’s offense, the dreadful bullpen let another game slip away, as Matt Albers (pic) and Kam Mickolio both coughed up three-run homers in a six-run Sox seventh inning. The Birds are now 2-16. Need we say more?

Orioles recall Hughes, option Turner - 4/24/2010 1:00:00 PM - Miller
The Orioles announced Saturday that they have recalled Rhyne Hughes from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned Justin Turner to the Tides.

O's give one away in Boston, 4-3 - 4/23/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a three-game series in Boston, and-- you’ll never guess!-- lost to the Red Sox by a 4-3 score. Despite a late-inning rally to erase a three-run deficit, the O’s ultimately returned to their familiar place in the loss column as shoddy defense, a miserable bullpen, atrocious clutch hitting, and an overall lack of competence caught up with them in the end. Jim Johnson’s bases-loaded walk in the eighth snapped a three-all tie and doomed the Birds to their 15th loss in 17 games this season.

Swept in Seattle; What next? - 4/21/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed their latest exercise in futility with a 4-1 loss in Seattle, completing a predictable three-game sweep at the hands of the Mariners. M’s ace Felix Hernandez had no trouble joining the parade of pitchers who have embarrassed the O’s offense this year, going all nine innings for the win, while Kevin Millwood’s valiant eight-inning complete game went to waste once again. The Birds fell to 2-14 with no end in sight to the losing.

O's Claim P Pedro Viola off Waivers from Reds - 4/21/2010 5:00:00 PM - Hoffman

Sleepwalking in Seattle: O's lose again - 4/20/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles reached a baker's dozen in the loss column with another infuriating defeat, falling to the Mariners by a 3-1 score. The offense put up another inexcusable performance, getting stymied by no-name Jason Vargas for just three hits, while going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Starter David Hernandez was the latest tough-luck loser for the Birds, delivering a quality start but getting sabotaged by the lack of run support.

O's Option Bergesen to AAA Norfolk - 4/20/2010 11:00:00 AM - Hoffman
The Orioles today announced that they've optioned struggling starting pitcher Brad Bergesen to AAA Norfolk.

Back to the drawing board: O's lose - 4/19/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles returned to their losing ways, opening a three-game series in Seattle with a lackluster 8-2 defeat. Instead of building on their feel-good victory on Sunday, the Orioles deteriorated to the atrocious form of their previous 12 games, complete with a horrid start from Brad Bergesen, costly blundering by the defense, and an embarrassing no-show for the offense, dropping to 2-12 on the season. We stayed up late for this?

Hallelujah! Orioles finally win, 8-3 - 4/18/2010 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
It’s a miracle! The Orioles snapped their nine-game skid with their long-awaited second win of the year, 8-3, over the Athletics. After 12 games of atrocious, unsightly numbers in clutch situations, the O’s finally busted loose with several timely hits. Ty Wigginton (pic) led the way with a two-run double and a two-run homer as the Birds went 5-for-11 with men in scoring position. Just as in their first victory, Brian Matusz was the winning pitcher, racking up eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, and fill-in closer Jim Johnson recovered from Saturday’s meltdown with two scoreless frames for the save.

O's fall in 9th for 9th straight loss - 4/17/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued their run toward baseball history with their ninth straight loss, 4-3, to the Athletics. Just when it seemed that the O’s might ruin their best-laid plans by winning a game, Jim Johnson made sure that the Birds would live to see another loss, giving up two runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a one-run lead. All the pieces of the puzzle are coming together perfectly for the Orioles-- read on for more.

Orioles place Pie on DL; recall Montanez - 4/17/2010 1:00:00 AM -
The Orioles announced Friday that they have placed Felix Pie on the disabled list and recalled Lou Montanez.

Make it double digits: O's lose 10th - 4/16/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fell to 1-10 on the season with their eighth consecutive loss, 4-2, to the Athletics. What’s left to say at this point? The O’s couldn’t hit, especially with runners in scoring position. They made mistakes in the field. The pitching wasn’t good enough. The effort was uninspired and listless. How many times can we repeat the same old mantra? And how long before GM Andy MacPhail is forced to make changes?

A new coast, but another O's loss - 4/15/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles started a 10-game road trip in familiar territory: the loss column. In a 6-2 defeat to the Oakland Athletics, the Orioles continued to do absolutely nothing right. They made several critical defensive mistakes that opened A’s rallies, while the offense stranded another 10 men on base, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. With the loss, Dave Trembley’s team claimed the worst record in the major leagues at 1-9.

Orioles swept away by Rays, 9-1 - 4/14/2010 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed an 0-6 homestand and got swept by the Rays, falling in the afternoon finale by a 9-1 score. Starter Brad Bergesen gave up more runs (eight) than the Orioles had hits (six), and the club dropped to 1-8 on the season as it heads for the West Coast. Sure, it make look ugly, but there’s a perfectly simple and understandable reason for the Orioles’ slow start to the season-- read on for more.

O's Closer Gonzalez to DL - 4/14/2010 12:00:00 PM - Hoffman
The Orioles today moved maligned closer Michael Gonzalez to the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder.

It's getting ridiculous: O's lose again - 4/13/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Man, oh man. When it rains, it pours. The Orioles added to their collection of absurd and painful early-season losses with an 8-6, 10-inning defeat to the Rays. Get a load of this one: After seven innings, the O’s led by three runs, and Brian Matusz (pic) was in the midst of a completely dominant outing, just five outs away from a shutout. And then, in an instant, it all vanished: the O’s collapsed in a five-run Rays eighth, then lost the game in the 10th on a Carlos Pena three-run homer off Matt Albers. The torturous ineptitude just never ends for the 1-7 Orioles.

Offense AWOL again, O's lose to Rays - 4/12/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The free-falling Orioles dropped to 1-6 on the season with another horrid loss, 5-1, to the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite a strong start by Jeremy Guthrie, little else went right for the Birds, who once again took an extended snooze on offense, complete with a humiliating baserunning blunder that quashed a possible rally. A lackadaisical effort from a struggling team in front of a record-low crowd at Camden Yards-- it already feels like September, yet we’re only seven games into what’s quickly becoming a painful season.

Ill-timed error costs Millwood, O's - 4/11/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed a miserable opening week to the season, getting swept by the Blue Jays in a 5-2 loss. For seven innings, Kevin Millwood looked like he would take the team on his shoulders and lead the O’s to victory, but a two-out error in the eighth opened the door for back-to-back Jays homers that turned the tide and buried the Birds. Meanwhile, the O’s offense put up another unsightly performance, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Can we preemptively call a mulligan on the 2010 season?

Brian Roberts to DL - 4/11/2010 1:00:00 PM - Hoffman
Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is headed to the disabled list due to the abdominal injury suffered while stealing second base in Baltimore' home opener on Friday. Norfolk Tides utility infielder Justin Turner will replace Roberts on the 25-man roster.

Offense a no-show in 3-0 shutout loss - 4/10/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles dropped to 1-4 on the season with a truly pathetic offensive performance, getting shut down by journeyman no-name Dana Eveland in a 3-0 shutout. The slumping Birds continued their lack of clutch hitting-- twice stranding two runners in scoring position-- and never found any hitting rhythm in a lackluster loss. The blackout ruined a valiant effort by David Hernandez, who delivered a quality start in his 2010 debut.

Gonzo blows it again in home opener - 4/9/2010 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Could there be a less popular person in Baltimore than Mike Gonzalez right now? The Orioles kicked off their 2010 home opener with fanfare, festivities…and another meltdown by their new closer in a painful 7-6 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. For the first eight innings, this was an outstanding game, as the O’s overcame a rough Brad Bergesen start to rally back from a 3-0 deficit, then took the lead on a thrilling play in the eighth. But the combustible Gonzalez blew the game just as he did on Opening Night in Tampa, getting booed off the field by the Camden Yards crowd as he led the Birds to defeat.

O's squeak out first win of 2010 - 4/8/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles sweated out their first win of the 2010 season in a nail-biting 5-4 decision over the Rays. Brian Matusz’s (pic) much-anticipated debut start was nothing to write home about, but he gutted through five innings despite suffering control problems and was rewarded with a victory when the O’s put together a four-run sixth inning. The win was not without its share of drama, as cardiac-inducing closer Mike Gonzalez edged to the precipice of another blown save before stranding the bases loaded in the ninth.

O's one-upped by Rays again, 4-3 - 4/7/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fell to 0-2 on the young season, losing another one-run game to the Rays, 4-3. Jeremy Guthrie, despite delivering a quality start in his first outing of 2010, was the victim of a defensive play that wasn’t made and an offense that provided no support. After plating two first-inning runs, the Birds’ bats went to sleep against Matt Garza, and a ninth-inning rally fell short. The O’s will hope to avoid a season-opening sweep on Thursday.

And away we go: O's lose opener in 9th - 4/6/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles suffered a heart-wrenching loss in their first game of the season, blowing the game in the bottom of the ninth to the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3. The maddening contest featured three solo homers by the Birds but nothing else offensively, as they went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The missed opportunities cost them dearly when new closer Mike Gonzalez (pic) blew the save in his O’s debut, giving up a walkoff two-run single to Carl Crawford in the ninth. Hmm. This could be a long season.

O's save best for last in 11-0 rout - 4/3/2010 4:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles ended their Grapefruit League schedule in spectacular fashion, trouncing the New York Mets, 11-0, in Sarasota. Miguel Tejada’s (pic) grand slam led a 14-hit explosion for the Birds, who also enjoyed a Nolan Reimold homer and a 3-for-5 day by Adam Jones. Starter Brian Matusz made the most of his final tune-up with four scoreless innings, and six relievers combined to complete the shutout. The O’s finish their exhibition slate with a record of 12-17-1.

The Orioles announced three roster moves on Saturday.

Breaking even: Orioles tie Yanks - 4/2/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a game televised on ESPN, the Orioles tied the New York Yankees, 6-6. The O’s rallied back from a 4-0 deficit thanks to 15 hits and a lot of Yankee sloppiness, but let a two-run lead slip away with two outs in the ninth, at which point both teams decided to call it a day instead of going to extra innings. Yep, that’s spring training for you. In other news, Felix Pie hobbled off the field after being struck in the ankle.

Andino HRs, young pitchers prevail - 4/1/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ minor-league pitchers took center stage in a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. With most of the Birds’ regulars not making the trip to Port Charlotte, young hurlers Jake Arrieta, Steve Johnson, Pedro Beato, and Eddie Gamboa combined to hold the Rays to three runs. Offensively, Ty Wigginton and Robert Andino (pic) drove in two runs apiece.

O's trounced by Red Sox, 14-6 - 3/31/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles, in strong shades of 2009, got bushwhacked by the Boston Red Sox, 14-6. The Sox tattooed O’s pitching for not one but two grand slams, as Jason Berken (pic), Jim Johnson, and Dennis Sarfate all got clobbered, and the Birds’ regular bats couldn’t manage much of anything in an all-around ugly loss. Of course, it’s possible the O’s were just lulling the Red Sox into a false sense of security before the regular season begins.

O's fall to Tigers in slugfest - 3/30/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles ended up on the losing end of a back-and-forth 10-9 slugfest against the Detroit Tigers. If it’s possible for a spring training game to be a roller coaster ride, this contest fit the bill. The O’s came back from a 5-0 deficit, the lead changed hands five times, and the Tigers ended up winning in their last at-bat. It was a terrible day for pitchers-- Brad Bergesen, especially, was awful-- but a great day for hitters, including Miguel Tejada’s (pic) four-hit, three-double performance.

As spring training winds down for the Orioles, they've begun to make some of the more pressing decisions that fans have been following. Who's won the job of 5th starter: David Hernandez or Chris Tillman?

O's lose homer-fest to Yankees - 3/29/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Under the lights at Ed Smith Stadium, the Orioles lost a homer-happy ballgame to the New York Yankees, 11-7. The most discouraging news of the night was another uninspiring outing by struggling starter Jeremy Guthrie (pic), who couldn’t find his control and was tagged for five runs. On a more positive note, the O’s offense came alive and pounded out 13 hits, including homers by Adam Jones and Luke Scott.

Hernandez impressive in O's win - 3/27/2010 4:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles put together a strong performance against one of their top divisional foes, beating the Boston Red Sox, 6-1. David Hernandez (pic), still in the running for the rotation, made a great case for himself by working five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Offensively, every Oriole starter had at least one hit-- including a 3-for-4 day for Garrett Atkins-- and Justin Turner drove in three runs.

Tillman labors, Reimold HRs in loss - 3/26/2010 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles mixed signs of promise with signs of concern in a 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins. The O’s offense continued to struggle, though Nolan Reimold (pic) parked his first spring homerun. Starter Chris Tillman alternated between effective and erratic, allowing two runs but laboring through 88 pitches in just 4 1/3 innings. Brian Roberts finally made his spring debut, but struck out three times.

O's bring their A game, beat Yankees - 3/25/2010 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles enjoyed perhaps their finest game of the spring with an 8-0 win over the New York Yankees. Pretty much everything went right for the Birds; the offense busted out of its slumber with an eight-run attack, including an Adam Jones homer, and Brad Bergesen (pic) and four relievers combined on a shutout. Spring training game or not, it’s nice to see the Orioles clicking on all cylinders for a day.

Arrieta assigned to minor league camp - 3/25/2010 1:00:00 AM - Miller
The Orioles announced Thursday that RHP Jake Arrieta has been assigned to minor league camp.

Matusz iffy in loss to Cardinals - 3/24/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their second straight game in Jupiter, the Orioles fell to the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-2. Rookie lefty Brian Matusz wasn’t as sharp as in his previous spring outings but still turned in a quality start, allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings. Matusz held sluggers Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday to an 0-for-5 performance but wasn’t as successful against the rest of the Cards’ lineup.

Offense struggles, Guthrie so-so in loss - 3/23/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles unveiled what might be their Opening Day lineup, but couldn’t generate much offense in a 5-2 loss to the Florida Marlins. The O’s scored just one run in the first eight innings, and a comeback attempt in the ninth fell short. Jeremy Guthrie, badly needing a quality outing, gave a so-so performance, allowing nine baserunners but just two runs in five innings.

O's beat Phillies for third time - 3/21/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Projected ace Kevin Millwood began to turn around his shaky spring with a strong outing against the Philadelphia Phillies, leading to a 5-4 Orioles win. The Orioles’ offense showed signs of life with 11 hits, including Nolan Reimold’s (pic) first base knock of the spring, a sharp single off the left-field wall that snapped his 0-for-22 drought. Reimold also collected his first spring RBI with a sac fly.

O's beat Pirates, lose to Red Sox - 3/20/2010 9:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a split-squad day, one Orioles team beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in Sarasota, 5-2, while the other group lost to the Boston Red Sox, 6-0, in Fort Myers. Brad Bergesen (pic) and Chris Tillman made the starts for their respective clubs, with varying results; Tillman held the Red Sox to just two hits in five strong innings, while Bergesen retired 10 straight Pirates after getting knocked around in the first.

Matusz no-hits Phils over 5 1/3 - 3/19/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Brian Matusz hit a new high point in an already impressive spring with a dominant performance, holding the Philadelphia Phillies hitless in a 2-0 Orioles win. Facing the regular starting lineup of the defending NL champions, Matusz allowed just two baserunners (both walks) while striking out six in 5 1/3 innings.

Guthrie torched again in ugly loss - 3/18/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a debacle of a game that makes us glad it’s only spring training, the Orioles were thumped by the Blue Jays, 13-3. Pretty much nothing went right for the Birds, from Jeremy Guthrie’s latest disastrous start (seven runs in three innings) to sloppy defense (including two errors on one play by Miguel Tejada) to a possible injury (Koji Uehara left with a sore left hamstring). Okay…two weeks left to straighten things out.

O's manage just two hits in loss - 3/17/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles failed to bring their bats in a 4-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, managing just two hits all day-- one to lead off the game and one with two outs in the ninth, and an 0-for-25 drought in between. The O’s also committed a pair of errors. In more positive news, Jake Arrieta enjoyed two outstanding innings of relief with four strikeouts.

2010 Minor League Spring Training Roster - 3/17/2010 12:00:00 PM - Miller
A look at players invited to minor league camp in Sarasota.

O's win low-scoring affair - 3/16/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
With most of their regulars again missing from the lineup, the Orioles squeaked past the Minnesota Twins, 3-1. Chad Moeller bashed a two-run homer, and fill-in 1-2 hitters Robert Andino and Justin Turner had two hits apiece. David Hernandez’s (pic) first spring start was a success, as he blanked the Twins over 3 2/3 solid innings.

Scott leads offense in win over BoSox - 3/15/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Despite a batting order that included just one projected starter, the Orioles put up an impressive offensive showing in an 8-4 win over the Boston Red Sox. Luke Scott (pic) led the charge with a four-RBI day, including a three-run homer, and was one of seven Orioles to post a multi-hit day amidst a lineup of backups and minor leaguers. Brad Bergesen’s second start, though a bit shaky, was an improvement on his first.

Matusz brilliant against Phillies - 3/14/2010 4:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Behind a dominant outing by Brian Matusz, the Orioles notched their third spring training win, 4-3, over the Philadelphia Phillies. The rookie left-hander became the first O’s starter this spring to work five innings, and he looked brilliant, allowing only three baserunners among the 18 batters he faced.

Pitching struggles continue in loss - 3/13/2010 4:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ first look at the Yankees in 2010 ended with a familiar result: a loss. In a 5-3 O’s defeat, the Yankees tagged a struggling Jeremy Guthrie (pic) for four runs and eight hits in the first two innings. In more positive news, Ty Wigginton was the hitting star with two hits, including a two-run homer, and he also turned a nifty double play at second base.

Millwood ripped in rain-shortened loss - 3/11/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Kevin Millwood’s second spring start turned out almost as poorly as his first in the Orioles’ 8-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins. The Birds’ veteran right-hander was tagged for nine hits and five runs in 2 2/3 innings, leaving his spring ERA at 29.70. The game was halted by rain in the 8th.

Bergesen returns to the hill, O's win - 3/10/2010 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles got back on the winning side of things with a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, a game that featured Brad Bergesen’s long-awaited return to the mound. Bergesen struggled a bit with his command and allowed two runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings, but the important thing is that he was healthy.

Defense implodes in dreary loss - 3/9/2010 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fell to 1-6 in spring training with an all-around ugly loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, 8-3. The O’s committed a whopping five errors in the game, including two by Josh Bell, leading to four unearned runs, in tandem with so-so performances from the pitching and offense. All in all, the only good news about this game was that it didn’t count.

Offense nonexistent; Matusz Ks 6 - 3/8/2010 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles lost their fifth straight spring game with a 5-0 shutout defeat to the Minnesota Twins. The Birds managed only three hits in the entire game, all singles. Brian Matusz, in his second spring start, continued to pile up impressive strikeout numbers, as he punched out six more hitters in 2 2/3 innings.

O's lose to BoSox in first TV game - 3/7/2010 4:00:00 PM - Folkemer

Millwood torched in O's spring debut - 3/6/2010 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fell to 1-3 in the spring with a 9-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland. Other pitchers fared much better, including Matt Albers (pic), who worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Tillman, relievers rack up Ks in loss - 3/5/2010 10:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3, though the game was highlighted by strong outings from several pitchers.
