Tommy Hunter Blows Save: Os Win Anyway! 5-to-4

    Written by Michael Williams

    Overview

The Orioles gave up a 3-to-2 lead in the ninth inning when Tommy Hunter allowed three hits to plate two runs and blow the save. Rain prevented the Orioles from completing the bottom half of the ninth inning and a delay ensued.  A two out rally followed the rain delay. The Orioles down to their last strike with the bases loaded tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a Delmon Young pinch hit infield single. After Ryan Webb navigated the top of the tenth, J.J.Hardy singled with one down and Steve Clevenger doubled to plate the winning run. Orioles Win.

    Starting Pitching

Miguel Gonzalez pitched seven innings of two run ball. He never had a lead, and limited the damage to pitch his best outing of the season. A solo homer by phenom George Springer and a Dexter Fowler single to plate Jonnathan Villar were the only runs he allowed. The Astros were reluctant to swing at his forkball early and it probably was the reason he found himself pitching in tighter situations.

    Relief Pitching

Zach Britton pitched a scoreless eighth inning with the infield turning a world class double play.

Tommy Hunter came in to finish out the game. He gave up three hits including a double after one was out to blow the save and lose the lead.

Ryan Webb stranded a runner at second base in the top of the tenth inning with two strike outs.

    Hitting

Adam Jones hit a solo homer. Nelson Cruz hit a solo homer (his tenth).

The Orioles scored the second run on a bases loaded wild pitch.

With two out in the ninth inning, Jon Schoop and Nick Markakis singled and Manny Machado walked.

Delmon Young tied the game with a hustle infield single in the bottom of the ninth.

J.J. Hardy singled in the tenth and Steve Clevenger (3-for-5) won the game with a walk off double.

    Defensive Highlights/Lowlights

J.J. Hardy turned a ridiculous double play for Zach Britton.

David Lough (a defensive replacement) saved a run in the ninth.

Adam Jones made an error that did not cost any runs.

    Key Moments In The Game

The Astros went up 2-0 After tying the game on a wild pitch, the Orioles stranded a runner at third base with only one out. Tommy Hunter pitched poorly again. It may have been raining at the time.

Delmon Young hustled out his hit by a hald a step. Saved the game.

J.J. Hardy and Steve Clevenger came up huge in extra innings.

    Other Notes/Musings

The Orioles extended their AL East lead to 1.5 games with a Yankees loss.

Each team used five pitchers tonight.

Chris Davis played for Bowie today. He is eligible to return from the disabled list tomorrow.
