Tonight's game got under way at 8:05 ET with Bud Norris and Nick Martinez on the mound. Adam Jones hit an RBI single in the top of 1st. Adrian Beltre put the Rangers up 2-1 with a homer in the bottom of the 1st. Nick Markakis hit his 4th home run in the 4th, followed by another RBI single from Jones and a sac fly by J.J. Hardy to put the O's up 4-2. Chris Davis launched a homer in the 5th and Oriole nemesis Adrian Beltre hit another homer, of the three run variety, to tie the game 5-5. Markakis put the O's ahead with an RBI single in the 6th and the bullpen held on for the close win.
Bud Norris pitched an effective outing throught he first four innings. He showed good fastball command and dialed his heater up to 94-95 MPH when he needed too. His slider also looked sharp and was responsible for three of his five strikeouts. Adrian Beltre proved to be his nemesis and is an Oriole nemesis in general. With two outs and a runner on in the 5th, and just twor runs allowed, Norris looked on his way to a quality start. Then, Mitch Moreland lined an infield single off his pitching elbow. Bud was in clear discomfort but elected to stay in anyway. His fastball command slipped though, and of course Beltre was up to take advantage, tying the game with one swing while knocking Norris out of the game after five.
Final Line: 5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 HR, 2 BB, 5 K
The relief corps were terrific tonight, combining to pitch four scoreless innings with five hits, no walks, and four strikeouts.
T.J. McFarland worked the 6th inning and got two outs in the 7th before Darren O'Day entered to face Beltre, who flied out to center.
O'Day worked a scoreless 8th, striking out Leonys Martin in the process.
Zach Britton entered for the save in the 9th, inducing a crucial double play off the bat of Shin-Soo Choo and striking out Michael Choice on a nast low and away sinker to end the game.
Another good night for the bats who combined for 13 hits and struvk out just 4 times.
Adam Jones had a pair of big RBI singles and finished 2-for-5.
Nelson Cruz raised his average to a team leading .319 with a 3-for-5 night. No home runs.
Nick Markakis had a big night, bashing a home run and driving in the go-ahead run.
Manny Machado also had a multi-hit game.
Defensive Highlights/ Lowlights
Caleb Joseph had a great night defensively behind the plate and you can see why Buck decided to keep him over Clevenger. The highlight of his night came in the 8th inning on a sac bunt by Donnie Murphy that he barehanded without hesitation and gunned down to second to get a key force out.
Manny Machado is making throwing errors more frequently this year and had another one in the 6th inning.
Key Moments In The Game
With two runners on, Nick Markakis proved to have the key hit in the game in the 6th, sending a groundball single into left field to drive in a hustling Caleb Joseph from 2nd.
Other Notes/ Musings
Can we stop pitching to Adrian Beltre with runners on base?
Baseball legend Don Zimmer passed away tonight. RIP
Buck mentioned after the game the that Miguel Gonzalez may be headed to the DL soon. Stay tuned for the details on that situation. There was already a rumor floating around that Kevin Gausman may be recalled for Satrurday's start.
Get the brooms out. O's go for the sweep tomorrow with Chris Tillman opposing Colby Lewis.
