Orioles lose 5-2; Split Series With Blue Jays

    Written by Chris Slade

    Overview

The Orioles attempted the series win today with Chris Tillman and J.A. Happ on the mound. Jose Bautista doubled in a run in the 1st. Dioner Navarro singled in another run in the 4th inning. Melky Cabrera hit a sac fly. The Orioles got on the board in the 6th inning on an RBI single from Nelson Cruz. The Blue Jays added a few more runs in the 8th and an Adam Jones solo home run was all the Orioles could come up with as they dropped the series finale 5-2.

    Starting Pitching

Chris Tillman had an odd outing today. He wasn't terrible and picked up a quality start over seven innings of work but didn't strike out a single batter. As usual, he got off to a bad start in the 1st with Jose Reyes hitting a leadoff single and Jose Bautista driving him in. He managed through seven innings and didn't issue a single walk today either. The offense didn't help him out much so despite a relatively solid outing, he took the loss.

    Final Line: 7 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, Loss

    Relief Pitching

Tommy Hunter took over in the 8th and did not pitch well, allowing two runs to score which gave the Blue Jays a comfortable lead to work with.

T.J. McFarland worked the final inning and a third, allowing two hits but no runs to score.

    Hitting

J.A. Happ didn't issue a single free pass today so while the Orioles were able to get seven hits off him over six innings, they struggled to get runs in as Happ picked up several key strikeouts to work out of potential jams.

Nelson Cruz had a big day and reached base all four times.

Adam Jones had a multi hit game, including his 11th home run of the season.

    Defensive Highlights/ Lowlights

In the 8th, J.J. Hardy made a nice heads up play on a soft gorunder, gunning down Jose Bautista at home, who attempted to score on the play.

    Key Moments In The Game

The Blue Jays getting an early lead on Tillman.

The insurance runs the Blue Jays were able to come up with against Hunter in the 8th.

    Other Notes/ Musings

Today was the Orioles 5th sellout of the year. The previous one was on Friday. Both of these games were the two losses of the four game set with the Blue Jays. Just sayin..

Nelson Cruz had an 11 game RBI-less streak before today's game.

Orioles now head to Tampa where Wei-Yin Chen will oppose Jake Odorizzi tomorrow night.
