    Orioles Prospect HOTSHEET: Mid-July Edition

    Written by Chris Slade

We're already more than halfway through July which has flown on by it seems ever since the Independence Day celebrations came to a close. We're also more than halfway through the baseball season with the MLB all-star break coming to a close this week.

We had some recent (and much deserved) promotions for three of the mainstays on the HOTSHEET's this season. In case you haven't been paying attention, Mike Yastrzemski got the move up to AA Bowie after just 23 games with Frederick. Christian Walker and Dariel Alvarez (both AA all-stars) are now in Norfolk, just a call away from the big leagues.

The HOTSHEET is heavy with hitters in this edition and our latest number one on the HOTSHEET is starting to look like potentially more than just the grandson of a certain Red Sox Hall-Of-Famer. I'm talking about...

    1) Mike Yastrzemski - CF - Delmarva Shorebirds (Low A)

    Age: 23

    OH Prospect Rank: UR

    July Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    12 .392 56 22 6 3 1 13 4 8 .419 .660 1.079

Yaz went 4-for-5 with a triple in his AA debut, quite the start for him now that he's at an age appropriate level. His bat had been blistering hot at Frederick which probably led to him getting the nod as the replacement for Dariel Alvarez.

    2) Chance Sisco - C - Delmarva Shorebirds (Low A)

    Age: 19

    OH Prospect Rank: 7

    July Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K OBP SLG OPS
    16 .388 67 26 5 1 1 14 3 8 .414 .537 .952

Sisco continues to smoke the ball and has cut his k-rate down so far in July while increasing his extra base output. You can't ask for more. He's having a terrific year at the plate.

    3) Hector Veloz - 1B - Aberdeen Ironbirds (A-)

    Age: 20

    OH Prospect Rank: UR

    July Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    14 .302 43 13 3 2 2 11 9 17 .436 .605 1.041

Veloz is still a fringe prospect but at age 20, he has time on his side. So, its easier to forgive his grotesque strikeout rate with Delmarva earlier this year that led to him being sent back to the Ironbirds this Summer. He's still wiffing too much, but its nice to see the power bat starting to show in games as evidenced by that .605 slugging percentage of late.

    4) Adrian Marin – SS – Frederick Keys (AA)

    Age: 20

    OH Prospect Rank: 12

    July Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    11 .310 42 13 4 0 1 4 4 13 .370 .476 .846

Finally, we see young Mr. Marin make his presence felt on the HOTSHEET. He's been in "nottie" territory for most of the season but he appears to be figuring things out at the plate so far in July. Hopefully, this continues.

    5) Dariel Alvarez - CF - Norfolk Tides (AA)

    Age: 22

    OH Prospect Rank: 9

    July Numbers so far:

    G AVG AB H 2B
3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    11 .300 40 12 1 0 2 10 4 4 .356 .475 .831

Fresh off a Futures Game appearance, Alvarez got the bump up to AAA this week and finished with an excellent .309/.332/.487 slash line in 359 at bats with the Baysox.

    6) Drew Dosch - 3B - Delmarva Shorebirds

    Age: 22

    OH Prospect Rank: UR

    July Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    15 .321 56 18 3 0 0 6 6 9 .415 .375 .790

Dosch continues to swing a steady bat for the Shorebirds despite less than ideal power numbers for a corner guy. I'd imagine he sees Frederick before the end of the year.

    7) Tyler Wilson - RHP - Norfolk Tides (AAA)

    Age: 24

    OH Prospect Rank: 22

    July Numbers so far:

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    3 2 0 2.25 20 23 1 6 13 .311 51.6% 3.60

Tyler Wilson has proven somewhat hittable thus far since his callup to AAA, but has held his own, picking up two wins in three starts. Don't sleep on this guy as a possible contributor for the Orioles next year.

    8)  Brian Gonzalez - LHP - GCL Orioles (R)

    Age: 18

    OH Prospect Rank: UR

    July Numbers so far:

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    3 0 0 0.00 6 2 0 1 7 .100 23.1% 1.37

Our first rookie ball entry of the year. The O's top pick from the 2014 draft has thrown the ball well so far, albeit in three innings or less stints. His fastball has reportedly been up to 93 mph.

    9) Hunter Harvey - RHP - Delmarva Shorebirds (Low A)

    Age: 19

    OH Prospect Rank: 2

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    1 1 0 1.50 6 5 0 3 8 .227 33.3% 2.03

I know, he's only made one start this month. But, he's Hunter Harvey! He also worked a scorless inning with two strikeouts in the Futures Game so that factors into his inclusion on the HOTSHEET too.

    10) Tim Berry - LHP - Bowie Baysox (AA)

    Age: 22

    OH Prospect Rank: 11

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    5 0 1 3.18 17 18 2 5 16 .273 44% 3.91

Berry's performance of late can be described in the same manner as his overall season performance; steady, not sexy. He continues to struggle at times with right handed bats, especially in road starts, but I like that his strikeout rate has risen this year at AA from 18.5% to 20.8%. That's a sign that he's handling the AA test just fine.

    The Not Sheet…Uh Oh…

Mike Wright - RHP - AAA - 0-1, 5.82 ERA, .324 AVG - Wright has been a little better of late, but no matter how you slice it, its been a pretty disappointing year for him.

Eduardo Rodriguez - LHP - AA - 0-1, 5.14 ERA, .316 AVG - Righties, righties, righties. That the issue for E-Rod and why he continues to appear on the not sheet. Righties are batting .328 and have drawn 20 walks in 46.1 innings against his this season.

Dylan Bundy - RHP - High A - 0-1, 9.26 ERA, .326 AVG - I didn't think it was possible for the boy wonder to land on the not sheet but here we are. His time at Frederick hasn't gone as smooth as his time at Aberdeen as he works on getting back to 100%.

Parker Bridwell - RHP - High A - 0-1, 7.00 ERA, .314 - Bridwell has had a mostly encouraging season to date but his first two starts of July illustrate the frustrating inconsistency that plagues him at times.

Trey Mancini - 1B - High A - .228/.297/.333 with 0 HR in 57 at bats - Mancini had been swinging a hot bat for some time now but has cooled off of late at Frederick.

Josh Hart - CF - Low A - .171/.205/.220 with 0 HR in 41 at bats - He's back from the DL which is a positive but his bat has been slow to pick up where he left off before he had to receive surgery on a partially torn meniscus.

    Prospects On The DL:

Henry Urrutia - OF - AAA - Big Hank will be returning very soon as he is currently working on a rehab assignment in the lower minors.
