Tonight's game got started at 7:05 ET with Bud Norris and Tyler Skaggs on the mound. Both pitching staffs dominated in this game with no runs crossing the plate for either side in the first nine innings, sending the game to extras. The Angels finally broke the scoreless tie in the 13th inning when Albert Pujols singled in a run.
Bud Norris has a strong track record of dominance against the Angels and that stretch continued tonight. The Angels were able to notch 8 hits off of him during the outing but Norris did not give in and allow the big swing to put runs on the board. His best inning came in the 7th when he struck Efren Navarro and Chris Iannetta for his lone multi-K inning of the game. His command was sharp all night and he walked just one batter. Normally, 7 shutout innings gets you a win, but tonight Norris had to settle for the no decision.
Final Line: 7 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, BB, 4 K, No Decision
Brad Brach took over in the 8th inning and stayed on to pitch the 9th inning. He was outstanding tonight, setting down all six he faced in dominant fashion and consistently touched 96 MPH on the gun.
Tommy Hunter entered the game for the 10th and 11th innings. He too was on his game tonight, striking out a pair and allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings.
Ryan Webb pitched a scoreless 12 inning but then allowd three straight hits to lead off the 13th inning which led to the Angels first run scoring.
Brian Matusz took over from there and struck out all three batters he faced. If you didn't know better, you would've thought that was Andrew Miller on the mound.
Not much in the way of hitting to talk about. Tyler Skaggs had a no-hitter going through the first 4.2 innings pitched before he left with a forearm strain. Caleb Joseph ended the no-no against Michael Morin in the 5th with a single.
Joseph singled again in the 9th to record the lone multi-hit game on offense.
Defensive Highlights/ Lowlights
Manny Machado showed off that hose on an arm he has on a deep ground ball that he ran to the foul line to field only to gun down Albert Pujols at first.
Key Moments In The Game
Any missed opportunity with runnes in scoring position for either side in this game (and there were several) was a key moment, with runs so hard to come by.
The Orioles had a chance with the bases loaded but two down in the 12th but the Angels worked out of it and proceeded to come up with the big run to win it in the top of the 13th.
Other Notes/ Musings
The Orioles had won 7 straight in extras before tonight. They finish the season 4-2 against the Angels.
Brian Matusz has quietly allowed no runs over his last 8.1 innings with 4 hits, 2 walks, and 13 strikeouts.
Manny Machado is basically a human vacuum over at third base.
Tired of playing west-coast teams? Me too. Another one coems to town tommorrow night in the Seattle Mariners. Wei-Yin Chen is scheduled to oppose Roenis Elias in a battle of lefties.
