Orioles Bats Silenced In 3-1 Loss

    Written by Chris Slade

    Overview

Tonight's game three of a four game set with the Rays got under way at 7:05 ET with Drew Smyly and Kevin Gausman on the mound. The Rays picked up two runs in the 1st on a fielders choice from Matt Joyce and an RBI single from Wil Myers. The Rays scored another run in the 2nd on a sac fly from Ben Zobrist. The Orioles cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Chris Davis homered. That was it, folks. We had out final score after just two innings as neither team scored again the rest of the way.

    Starting Pitching

Overall, Kevin Gausman wasn't at his sharpest tonight and ended up taking a loss. The Rays got to him early in the game and didn't allow him to settle in. They ran up his pitch count in the 1st with three hits and two runs scored. An unearned run scored in the 2nd on a sac fly by Ben Zobrist which gave the Rays a 3-0 lead. Gausman retired the side in order in the 3rd inning and faced three batters in the 4th inning as well. He appeared to have found a groove and was at just 80 pitches but Buck opted to pull him after 4 innings.

    Final Line: 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

    Relief Pitching

T.J. McFarland was outstanding in the long relief role tonight and kept the O's in the game with his three shutout innings of work.

Tommy Hunter worked a scoreless inning in the 8th, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Darren O'Day and his 0.92 ERA kept on rolling tonight. He struck out two during a scoreless inning of work in the 9th.

    Hitting

The bats collected just two hits total on the night. Drew Smyly did his best David Price impersonation and shut down a lineup full of lefty killers over his excellent outing. His lone blemish ironically came via solo home run to Chris Davis, who probably has the worst numbers against left handed pitching in the lineup.

Davis hit his 23rd bomb of the season in the the 2nd inning and that would end up the lone run of the game scored on offense.

Steve Pearce recorded the other hit in the game and finished 1-for-3 with a single and walk.

    Defensive Highlights/ Lowlights

J.J. Hardy made a crucial throwing error to lead off the 2nd inning that allowed Ryan Hanigan to reach base and eventually score.

Chris Davis made a fielding error in the 5th that allowed Desmond Jennings to reach base.

    Key Moments in The Game

The Rays getting on Gausman right away with two runs in the first inning led to a short outing for him and gave Drew Smyly all the run support he needed for a win.

    Other Notes/ Musings

The Orioles optioned Kevin Gausman to the GCL O's after the game along with Wei-Yin Chen earlier today. Don't worry, they'll be back when rosters expand on September 1st. There's a method to the madness.

Orioles will try again for the series win tomorrow night with Jeremy Hellickson and Bud Norris on the mound.
