Andrew Velazquez hit a dramatic, two out, two strike three-run homer to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the 9th, but Miguel Andujar hit a walk off home run off Kohl Stewart in the bottom of the 14th for a Yankees 5-4 win.

Orioles News

The Orioles DFA’d right-hander Shawn Armstrong and recalled Kohl Stewart in time for tonight’s game. Armstrong allowed four home runs in five and two-third innings in two relief appearances.

Lineup vs RHP Garrit Cole

  1. Austin Hays – CF
  2. Andrew Velazquez – 2B
  3. Dwight Smith Jr. – DH
  4. Rio Ruiz – 3B
  5. Mason Williams – LF
  6. Anthony Santander – RF
  7. Chance Sisco – C
  8. Chris Davis – 1B
  9. Jose Iglesias – SS

Starting Pitcher – John Means (0-2, 9.00)

The Yankees got on the board twice in the bottom of 3rd which was highlighted by Anthony Santander just out right dropping a fly ball on the warning track from an error. Means was able to work his way out of must larger issue with a key strikeout to keep it 2-0.

After striking out 11 times in six and two-third innings against Yankees starter Garrit Cole, the Orioles finally broke through in the top of the 7th after Austin Hays ended his day with a two-out double that moved Jose Iglesias to 3rd. The Yankees brought in Zack Britton to turn Andrew Velazquez around and he hit a grounder into the hole that SS Gleyber Torres got to, but pulled Luke Voit off the base with a throw for an error, scoring Iglesias to make it 2-1. Britton then struck out Dwight Smith Jr. to end the threat.

The Yankees got that back in the bottom of the 7th when Miguel Andujar took John Means 100th pitch and hit it out for a solo home run to end Mean’s day and extend the lead to 3-1. Means was very good allowing three runs, two earned on four hits and a walk while striking out six. Brandon Hyde went to the pen and brought in Tanner Scott. DJ LeMahieu met Scott with a solo home run of his own before Scott struck out Tyler Wade to keep it 4-1.

In the 9th, the Yankees brought in closer Aroldis Chapman to close out the game, with Chance Sisco and Chris Davis coming up (who were a combined 2-for-32 on the season), Hyde went to his bench where Pedro Severino collected a single and Renato Nunez drew a walk. Chapman settled down and struck out Iglesias but seemed to be in some discomfort. The Yankees took out Chapman and brought in Green to face Austin Hays who hit a ball deep to right but was caught at the fence, moving Severino to 3rd. That brought up Velazquez who took a Green 1-2 fastball and amazingly smacked a game-tying three-run homer to right field making it 4-4.

Hunter Harvey came on the bottom of the 9th and struck out two to keep it 4-4 and sending the game to extra innings.

After Green got the Orioles 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th, Hyde brought in Bleier to face the 9-1-2 hitters, all of which were lefties. Bleier did his job and got them 1-2-3 as well.

The Yankees brought in Adam Ottavino to start the 11th and Severino met him with a leadoff single but was wiped out when Nunez hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Iglesias then struckout to keep it 4-4.

With the bullpen a little tired, Hyde stuck with Bleier despite the 3-4-5 batters coming up. Torres led off the inning with a double, but Bleier came back to strike out Clint Frazier bringing up Gary Sanchez. The Orioles then had Bleier intentionally walk Sanchez to put runner on 1st and 2nd and set up the double play.

That brought up Luke Voit who was 2-for-14 against left-handers this year and with a ground ball pitch in Bleier, Hyde decided to keep the matchup. Voit was up to the challenge though and sharply hit a single back up the middle. Torres took off, rounded third and headed home as Austin Hays charged in from center field, fielded it and came up firing to home where his one hop throw allowed Severino to make a great tag to get Torres at home to keep it 4-4.

With Andujar coming up and with Bleier at 27 pitches, Hyde brought in Givens to try and get the game into the 12th. Andujar hit a ground ball into the hole at shortstop that Iglesias dove for, then fired to second in time for the force. The Orioles showed some great defense up the middle to get the game into the 12th.

Both the Orioles and Yankees went 1-2-3 in the 12th and the Orioles once again went quietly in the 13th.

In the bottom the 13th, wanting to stay away from Castro due to being tired, Hyde went to newly recalled Kohl Stewart. The Yankees got the first two runners on before Frazier hit a long fly ball to left center. Hays made the catch but Trauchman was able to tag and put the winning run on 3rd with one out. Stewart then got Sanchez to fly out to RF, too shallow for Torres to score then struck out Voit to send the game to the 14th.

Yankees reliever got the Orioles offense 1-2-3 once again as the Orioles have collect just two singles since Velasquez’s game tying home run in the 9th.

In the bottom of the 14th, Andujar led off and took a Stewart fastball over the left field fence for a game winning home run and a 5-4 extra inning win.

The Orioles offense struck out an amazing 19 times while collecting just 11 hits.

After the game, Hyde said, “I’m not sure what to say at this point. The guys are trying, but they are not hitting up to their potential so far. I’m going to talk to Mike after the game about seeing if we can maybe make some changes.”

The Orioles are now 3-8.

Orioles Player of the Game: Andrew Velazquez (2-for-6, HE and 3 RBI)

Tony’s Take: The Orioles offense has really been amazingly bad. It’s not like this offense looked good coming into he season, but Hyde has been forced to bat players like Rio Ruiz and Dwight Smith Jr. in the 3rd and 4th positions at times. Anthony Santander has been absolutely awful so far through 11 games and Chance Sisco and Chris Davis have been zeroes at the plate and when Yadier Molina steals off you, you know the other team may not respect your ability to throw out runners.

Means was really good today and the bullpen was outstanding until Stewart gave up the leadoff homer in the 14th, but the pen is really tired and they’ll probably need to send some guys down in order to get fresh arms up. They will also need to bring up a starter so expect some moves prior to tomorrow’s game.
