Orioles hold on for 4-3 win over Blue jays

After getting off to a 4-0 lead thanks to a 4th inning two-run homer by Pedro Severino, the Orioles held on for a 4-3 win over the Blue Jays.

Starting Pitcher – John Means (1-3, 6.93)

The Orioles got on the board first when 3B Rio Ruiz doubled in DH Renato Nunez in the top of the 2nd to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the second, one out out, a great throw by CF Austin Hays kept a runner at 3rd instead of tagging up and kept it 1-0.

In the top of the 4th, after a Hays triple, Aristides Aquino added another run with a sac fly to make it 2-0 a Nunez double and then a two-run homer by C Pedro Severino (3) extended the lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of 4th the Blue Jays got one back on a solo home run by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. off John Means to cut the lead to 4-1. in the bottom of the 5th, a Randal Grichuk solo homer made it 4-2. At this point, Means has now allowed 15 home runs in 41.1 IP this season.

The Blue Jays would push across a third run off reliever Tanner Scott in the bottom of the 8th, but Mychal Givens came on a tossed a perfect 9th for his 4th save of the year as the Orioles hold on for a 4-3 win over the Blue Jays.

Means improved to 2-3, 6.33 on the year after allowing just the two solo home runs over the 6.1 IP with 4Ks. Hays (.286) went 2-for-4 with a triple and runs scored.

Minor League Highlights

Norfolk won 9-1 (12-13)

Lucas Sims (1.50) allowed just one earned run over six innings with seven K’s in his Orioles organization debut. LF Taylor Jones (.337) had a huge night smacking 3 home runs in a 3-for-5 effort, driving in four.

Bowie won 7-3 (17-8)

Alex Wells (1.98) allowed three earned runs in 7.1 IP. CF Ryan McKenna (.242) went 2-for-5 with a home run.

Keys won 6-5 (13-14)

Adley Rutschman (.282) wen 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, but starter Grayson Rodriguez (5.29) struggled again allowing five runs in 4.1 IP.

Delmarva Lost 1-5 (11-15)

Dallas Litscher (4.76) allowed just two earned runs in 6.1 IP, but Malachi Emond (11.81) allowed three earned runs in just .2 IP to take the loss in relief. 3B Toby Welk (.244) hit his first Delmarva home run of the year while going 2-for-4.
