Most Likely Future Role: Mid-rotation starting pitcher/High Leverage reliever

What we know: The Orioles 1st round pick back in 2017, DL Hall has some of, if not the best left-handed stuff in all of the minor leagues. He begin this year basically unhittable as his four pitch mix was missing bats at other worldly 15.9 per 9 innings pitched with a four pitch mix that included a fastball that sat 96-98 MPH, with three offspeed pitches all of which missed bats and flashed plus. He dominated AA hitters to a slash of .145/.266/.273/.538. His changeup features well over 10mph of velocity separation from his fastball and he throws it with great arm speed. His slider is his 2nd best offspeed pitch that gets lots of swing and miss and almost impossible for minor league left-handed hitters to make contact. His curveball also can miss bats, but it was his least consistent offering. It’s a MLB all-star level assortment of pitches right now, so why his he the #5 prospect?
Control has been his biggest problem coming into this year, but he was improving in that category dropping his walk rate from 6.0/9 in A ball to 4.6/9 in his seven starts this year. His stuff is so good he may never need pinpoint command, but he will need better overall control in order to keep his pitch counts down if he wants to stay a starter. The biggest issue though was getting shut down in Mid-May with elbow discomfort only to find out in mid-July that he had a stress reaction in his left elbow and was shut down for the rest of the season. The good news it’s an injury that generally improves with rest so the Orioles are hopeful he will be ready by next spring.
What we don’t know: Besides the health issues, there is still real concern that Hall may not be able to get deep enough into games as a starter unless he can throw more consistent quality strikes. The good news is that many minor league hitters just take some good quality pitches because they know they can’t hit it anyways so perhaps that will improve with better hitters.
What we think: Hall is super athletic left-hander with the best overall stuff in the organization though Rodriguez has closed the gap this year. If he’s healthy next year and his control improves, he could move very quickly and could end up in Baltimore before the year is out. Hall has a floor of an impact reliever and upside of a TOR if his command improves.
